Lesson Title: Narrative Elements

Target Grade/Subject: Exceptional Education 6th grade/Reading

This lesson will give students a chance to be creative and create their own story to record. This will benefit those students who has a difficult time reading because they use words they know and understand. This group usually reads between a 2nd and 5th grade level. They will work in groups to help each other, if needed.

Length: 1 week

Objectives: Students will use internet resources to support the creation of stories that will be recorded and documented.

Tools and Resources

Computer with internet connections

An image, set of images or topic of focus

A storyline

Preparation

Technology/Classroom Arrangement and Management Strategies: students will work together on ibooks, if no internet connection, students will work on coming up with a storyline for their projects and make an script for their voicethread

Prerequisite technology skills needed by students: basic computer skills will be needed; being able to navigate through websites, and a tutorial will be given on voicethreads

Lesson Development

Focus and Review of previous work/knowledge: Students will be asked to think about their favorite story and the teacher will make a list on the board. They will then be asked “What makes up a story?” Have a few students share their answers.

Anticipatory set: Students will be asked to raise their hands and tell the story of the Three Little Pigs to the class. Let one student start, then another pick up, and another student pick up where the other student left off, and so on. See if students can identify what elements made up this story.

Instructional Activity:

1.  Define vocabulary and context clues for the story “Dig In and Win”

2.  Review voc./Voc. Worksheet

3.  Narrative Elements notes

4.  Start reading story “Dig In and Win”(identify narrative elements in the story and review voc as we read)

5.  Complete Narrative elements chart for “Dig In and Win”

6.  Start voicethread

-play video on what is a voicethread and how to make one

7. Students will start writing and editing their own story

8. Students will go online and find images to go along with their story

9. Students will record their story using voicethread

10. Students will comment on other students’ voicethread stories

Guided practice and checking for understanding (student activities): Students will complete vocabulary worksheet, they will complete narrative elements chart and we will go over as a class to check for understanding. The teacher will help students with voicethreads if needed.

Independent practice (student activities):

Students will create their own story making sure all elements are included, find images, and create their voicethread. A test will be given on the story “Dig In and Win” for comprehension and vocabulary understanding.

Closure: Students will present their voicethread to the class. Each student will comment on the voicethread of others.

Evaluation Procedure

Assessment of objectives: Students will be tested on vocabulary and comprehension of the story “Dig In and Win”. They will be given a rubric for the voicethread.
