Introduction
Overview
Musculoskeletal disorders continue to be a major type of work-related injury/illness affecting businesses worldwide. In addition to the pain and suffering sustained by individuals, employers are suffering tremendous reductions in profitability due to the overwhelming effects of these disorders. This course will look at a management approach to reduction of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).
Lesson Objectives
Upon completion of this topic students should be able to:
- Understand the basic systematic approach to studying work-related musculoskeletal disorders using ergonomic principles and engineering method.
- Identify risk factors associated with work-related musculoskeletal disorders
- Understand basic prevention and control techniques.
- Relate ergonomics programs to management system, continual improvement, and lean manufacturing techniques.

Ask students if any of them are currently involved in ISO 9000 or ISO 14000, Lean Manufacturing, or other management system approaches draw comparison to ergonomics. Facilitate discussion regarding comparative approaches to solving ergonomic problems to other manufacturing priorities.
