Creating a Safe Environment: Establishing the rules / 10 minutes /

Establish classroom rules for discussion activities as democratically as reasonably possible (pupils always respect rules and regulations if they have a part in deciding them). These are negotiable but respectful language; giving people space and time to speak; respecting each other’s confidentiality and the confidentiality of third parties such as friends and relatives must be among them. The rules should be observable to the whole class throughout the lesson.

LO: To understand how to retrieve information to create a timeline. / ALL pupils will highlight key events and information from a text (L3)
MOST pupils will place these in the correct order (L3/4)
SOME will create a timeline of Barbara Burford’s life (L4/5)

Homework: / Extend: Extension question: “Why was Barbara Burford an important person?”
Homework: Pupils create their own timeline for their own chosen person, or for their own life.
Begin the Learning - Starter: / 10mins / Pupils match the definition to the key word on the board.
Continue the Learning - Activities: / 10 mins

20mins / 1.  Pupils read through the article and highlight/underline key dates or events. Discuss definitions from starter activity and check understanding as they read.
2.  Recap understanding/learning by numbering the boxes on the board in the correct order that they appear in the article.
3.  Pupils create a timeline using success criteria and example as a guideline.

Allow pupils a dictionary for starter. / Students likely to need extension work
Allow pupils to research Barbara Burford and add extra information to timeline. Get them to answer extension question: “Why was Barbara Burford an important person?”
Celebrating the Learning - Plenary: / 5 mins / Place the events in order on a timeline. Also get the pupils to guess the year of the event for extra points.
