Objective

The students will identify geometric shapes in a painting, and use them to make a collage of their environment.

Materials

  • construction paper shapes- circle, triangle, rectangle, square- of various sizes and colors (these may be precut by the teacher or the students may cut them during the lesson, depending on skill level of the children)
  • glue
  • markers
  • 12" x 18" construction paper, preferably gray or blue

Kindergarten, lesson # 2

DIRECTED LESSON

Get Set

Ask students to identify geometric shapes. Can they find these shapes in the art print example and in the room environment?

Focus

What kind of house or apartment building do you live in? Does it have more than one story? What are some shapes you might see when you look at the outside of your house? What is around your house? (Trees, grass, flowers, other houses, garage, stores...)

Develop

  1. Students will make a collage of their house and its environment with the precut paper shapes. They will move the shapes around until they are satisfied. Then they will glue them down.
  2. Add details with markers.

Evaluation

Ask students to tell about their pictures. What shapes did they use?

Summary

It's easy to find shapes. They are all around us.

Journal writing prompt

Draw a picture of your neighborhood or your house. What shapes did you use?

Extensions

  • MATH - Eat crackers of different shapes- square, rectangle, circle. Make a classroom graph to show which one is your favorite.
  • READING - Read WE ARE ALL THE SAME...WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT by the Kindergarten students of Cheltenham Elementary School (Scholastic, Inc.). Talk about the drawings these students made of their houses.
  • VA - Read IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN by Maurice Sendak. What shapes can you find in the cityscapes?
  • VA - Draw shapes with stencils or templates. Add details with markers. Make animals, people or things.
  • VA - Find shapes in magazines. Cut them out. Make a shapes book.
