Leinster Hockey Code of Ethics Policy Statement

The Leinster Hockey Association (LHA) is fully committed to safeguarding the well-being of all its participants and will endeavour to create a safe environment for all individuals involved in our sport. Young people deserve to be given enjoyable, safe sporting opportunities and every individual in hockey is required to show respect and understanding for all participants' rights, safety and welfare. They should conduct themselves in a way that reflects the principles of the organisation and the guidelines contained in the Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children's Sport. Details of the full LHA Code of Ethics Policy can be found at

Players and parents are asked to complete the attached documents and return them to the coaching staff prior to the first hockey session.

Code of Conduct for Under-18 players

I am entitled to:

  1. Be safe and to feel safe.
  2. Be listened to.
  3. Be believed.
  4. Have fun and enjoy hockey.
  5. Have a voice in relation to my activities within hockey.
  6. Be treated with dignity, sensitivity and respect.
  7. Participate on an equitable and fair manner, irrespective of ability, disability, gender, religion, social class, etc.
  8. Experience competition at a level at which they feel comfortable.
  9. Make complaints and have them dealt with.
  10. Get help against bullies.
  11. Say No.
  12. Protect my own body.
  13. Talk to the LHA Children’s Officer if I have any problems.
  14. Confidentiality (see section on confidentiality).

I will always:

  1. Treat Sports Leaders with respect, (including administrators, coaches, umpires, managers, children’s officers, club officials, etc.,).
  2. Look out for myself and the welfare of others.
  3. Play fairly at all times, do my best.
  4. Be organised and on time.
  5. tell a person in charge if I am leaving a venue or competition before a training session or match is declared over.
  6. Respect team members, even when things go wrong.
  7. Respect opponents, be gracious in defeat.
  8. Abide by the rules set down by team managers when travelling to away events, representing the club, school, province or country, etc.
  9. Behave in a manner that avoids bringing Hockey in any way into disrepute.

I should never:

  1. Cheat
  2. Use violence or physical contact that is not allowed within the rules.
  3. Shout or argue with officials, team mates or opponents.
  4. Harm team members, opponents or their property.
  5. Bully or use bullying tactics to isolate another player or gain advantage.
  6. Take banned substances.
  7. During events under the auspices of the LHA consume alcohol, smoke or engage in sexual behaviour.
  8. Keep secrets, especially if they have caused or could cause harm.
  9. Tell lies about adults / young people.
  10. Spread rumours.
  11. Discriminate against other players on the basis of gender, disability, social class, religion or nationality.
  12. Post comments on websites, email, phone messages, social media and twitter that are offending or upsetting other people.

Code of Conduct for Parent/Guardian

Hockey wants to provide the best environment for all young people involved in the sport. Young people deserve to be given enjoyable, safe sporting opportunities free of abuse of any kind.

While the LHA recognises that you as a parent / guardian are responsible for the primary care and welfare of your child within hockey, your child will be in the care of the sport leaders for the duration of events under the auspices of the LHA and IHA. To make the child’s hockey experience free of stress the sport leaders will need your support. You can help and support the implementation of best practise by following the Code below.

Hockey believes that parents / guardians should

  1. Be a role model for your child and maintain the highest standards of conduct when interacting with young people, other parents, officials and organisers
  2. Never intentionally expose any young participant to embarrassment or disparagement by the use of flippant or sarcastic remarks
  3. Always recognise the value and importance of the officials and volunteers who provide sporting and recreational opportunity for your child. Do not publicly question their judgement or honesty. Respect Children’s Officers, Designated Persons, coaches, umpires, youth organisers, managers and other players
  4. Encourage your child to play by the rules. Teach your child that honest endeavour is as important as winning and do all you can to encourage good sportsmanship.
  5. Take an interest in your child’s sport and support the child’s participation in their chosen activity
  6. Parents should support all efforts to remove abusive behaviour and bullying behaviour in all its forms.

As a parent / guardian, I will:

  1. Make myself aware of and respect the rules and procedures set down by the LHA and IHA in respect of young people.
  2. respect my child’s teammates and leaders as well as players, parent / guardians and coaches from opposing teams.
  3. encourage my child to treat other participants, coaches, children’s officers, officials, selectors and managers with respect.
  4. give encouragement and applaud only positive accomplishments whether from my child, his/her teammates, their opponents or the officials.
  5. respect my child’s leader(s) and support his/her efforts.
  6. offer support when asked by the sport leaders to ensure the safety and welfare of children.
  7. make sure that my child(ren) will be brought and collected on time to and from the event venue.
  8. respect the officials and their authority during sessions and events within the club and under the auspices of LHA.
  9. never demonstrate threatening or abusive behaviour or use foul language.
  10. not put any disparaging remarks about the staff, players, officials or opponents on email, websites, phone messages, social media or twitter.

I agree to abide by the rules and procedures of Hockey and in particular the Guidelines and Code of Conduct for Parent / guardians.
