Purpose

The purpose of this Disability Action Plan is to assess the accessibility of Leigh Warren & Dancers’ activities and premises to persons with a disability and to ensure that all people can enjoy events and activities offered by the company.

LWD has no full-time staff members, the administration staff comprises the General Manager (4 days per week), Finance Manager (2 days per week) and Tour Co-ordinator (2 days per week). The Artistic Director and 7 Dancers are employed on a full time basis during projects and the Artistic Director is employed part-time in non project periods. Annual turnover of the company is approximately $500,000.

Access Issues

  • Venues

LWD typically performs in venues such as the Dunstan Playhouse and The Space at the Adelaide Festival Centre. These venues provide various facilities for people with disabilities.

LWD occasionally performs and holds functions in its own studio at the Lion Arts Centre. The studio is located in a heritage building leased to the company by the South Australian Minister for the Arts. Access to the studio is up three flights of stairs. There is no lift. There are no toilets for people with disabilities within the building. There is no carpark for people with disabilities in the vicinity of LWD’s studio.

  • Action

Determine the facilities available at each venue to be used by the company.

Continue to liaise with Arts SA about the possibility of the landlord providing a lift to facilitate access to LWD’s studio.

Liaise with Arts SA about the possibility of upgrading existing toilets at the Lion Arts Centre to cater for people with disabilities. For the time being, advise people of the location of toilets for people with disabilities at the neighbouring University of SA campus.

Liaise with the Adelaide City Council through the Lion Arts Centre Management Association about the provision of a car park suitable for people with disabilities close to the Lion Arts Centre.

When setting ticket prices consider the option of providing discounted tickets to carers as well as people with a disability.

Ensure that access information is included in all marketing information.
