Weekly Update

Room 208

Fifth Grade

1-15-16

Parents, I have changed the first part of our weekly update. The latter part is a repeat of important information.

Legoland Field Trip Info

7 Habits Parent Night

MAPS testing

Language Arts:

This week we continued our work with “Using Your Wits” in Treasures. We read fiction texts. The first piece of text we read was a realistic fiction text titled, The Party. Our second selection was a fairy tale titled, Blancaflor. The students loved this story.

Writing:

Students completed their Vision Boards and their 2016 Resolution papers. Um, your kiddos…crazy! They have the best resolutions. I wish I could have been that thoughtful. WOW! And their structure and organization is astounding.

Math:

The students continue to hone their k paid off!

Next up, we will continue to explore addition and subtraction of fractions. Students will focus more on the algorithm in the second half of this module.

Social Studies:

Students were assessed in their understandings of the big ideas in their exploration unit. Next week we will work on Early Colonial Settlements in a centers format. This will be a quick unit. After Martin Luther King, Jr. break we will move on to Colonial America.

Science:

Ms. Kuzman wrapped up a science experiment about plants that she was conducting with the students. Students will be assessed in their understanding of food chains/webs/biomes and plants next week.

After they will move on to decomposition…very excited…we have worms on order!

Legoland---FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2016

On Friday, February 5 students from Rooms 207 and 208 will go to Legoland for an engineering field trip. This is the first time that Solana Pacific is going on this field trip. We are very excited, but we do not know quite what to expect.

What we do know is that the students will leave from Solana Pacific around 9:00 am on bus. We will travel to Carlsbad to meet the Legoland official. Students will then attend classes that will promote engineering and construction. Students will break and eat sack lunch on the Legoland grounds. They will finish their afternoon with a couple of more classes. We will board the busses after. We anticipate returning to school around 2:00 pm. Students will be dismissed normally.

It is very important that I share there will be no rides, shopping, or eating from the restaurants. This is not a typical Legoland trip. I am sorry. I know. Bummer.

We will need four chaperones. If you are interested, please e-mail me by 1/15/16. If we have more than four people volunteer, we will draw names out of a hat. Actually, I will type all the names out and have students place the names in a hat for Ms. Fregoso to draw.

WINTER MAPS TESTING:

January 20, 2016 8:45-10:15 am ELA

January 29, 2016 8:45-10:15 am Math

We will use the MAPS data to reflect on how students are achieving in fifth grade. I am excited to see how they are doing. Please remember MAPS data is just one measurement of how your kiddos are doing. Some students can get really anxious and uptight about this test. We will do what we can to ease that anxiety!

Warmly,

Mrs. Dart
