Meeting minutes

BJ: We will go through the Leeds Athletics Network (LAN) Year 4 plan and discuss projects related only to track & field and juniors.

Year 4 Plan
Coach & Official bursaries (Number 2 in Y4 plan)
BJ: The bursary provided by the LAN remains at 30%. This is off coaching and official courses.
LA: The Level 2 England Athletics course cost have been reduced. They are now around £250. This includes courses such as CIRF, coaching children, etc.
HP: I received an email from Chris Gott about a coaching bursary for under 25s, is this something similar?
LP: Chris Gott is the Leeds City Council Club Development Officer for West and North West. Chris has two bursary’s running funded by area committee. Inner West which is fully subscribed and the outer North West which is open at the moment (Otley’s area).
BJ: You can apply for a WYSport coaching bursary too, but this must not be after you’ve been on the course. You must apply before the next panel meeting where decisions are made about who gets the bursary. This is taking place on 30th November and therefore you must apply before and state the course you’re booked on to. For more information go to the coaching website.

DH: Can you still use the bursary for officials? As we’ve had interest from people for timekeeping courses.
BJ: Yes, there are plenty of courses in the course calendar. I think there’s a timekeeping course at Doncaster. Currently we don’t need to put on courses just for the LAN as there’s not the demand. Just email me the details of those interested in going on an officials course (name, course cost), let me know when they’ve completed the course we can send the club the 30% LAN subsidy.
LP: If you are thinking of setting up a Satellite Club and as part of making it a sustainable you need to upskill a coaching or assistant coach, then you can use the set up funds to support putting people through courses. In this instance this should be used before looking into the bursary.
Marketing and Communications (Number 5 in the Y4 plan)
IL: Did we complete the flyer with all the clubs with junior provision? I think it would be a good to get this printed to hand out at various events, to have in Leisure Centres.
DH: I’ve had lots of enquires as a result of my details being on the Lions’ Programme poster that’s been displayed everywhere.
BJ: We’ve got a flyer that Louise put together it’s on the website.
ACTION: Please can you check your details and we can print.
BJ: There’s also a junior park starting at Roundhay Park on the 24th November, every Sunday at 9am.
Coach Development (Number 6 in Y4 plan) – Workshops
BJ: Can you (IL) still deliver the marathon training workshop you offered a while back?
IL: Yes. We need to make sure we are promoting what’s out there, such as workshops on the LCDP. Has the LCDP been sent to all clubs electronically?
LA: Yes, I only get 100 hard copies so we can’t send them
LA: I’ll send to you again to promote to your coaches
BJ: In terms of other workshops we will promote what’s being put on through the LCDP instead of putting new workshops and targeting the same group of people.
IL: one of our coaches puts on an injury prevention session each week in Wetherby Sport Association.
Coach Development (Number 7 in Y4 plan) – Mentoring
BJ: We wanted to pay mentors to support with the CIRFs and have approached a few head coaches across Leeds.
BJ: On January 11th, Holly was also looking at putting on a practical workshop at Leo’s (King Lane, LS17) for LIRFs to give them some practical leading ideas. We’d provisionally asked a few experienced leaders to deliver sessions at this workshop. Those leaders were Hilary Wharam (Horsforth Harriers), Mark Hetherington (Abbey Runners) and Hugh Pearson (Otley AC).
BJ: We also want to encourage LIRFS to become CIRFs, however understand there’s a jump both in the financial cost and in the amount of work/time required in the award.
LA: There’s going to be workshops specifically for those interested in the CIRF, called LIRF to CIRF. This is likely to be on 16th February and will be part of the LCDP.
LA: Paul Moseley is now a tutor who can offer regional support for those doing the CIRF.
JS: It’s likely that I will do mine in November at Leeds Met.
ACTION: HW to promote when all details are confirmed.
Coach Development - Athletics 365
BJ: We were thinking of doing a Athletics 365 evening as we did at Leeds City AC, where other club coaches attended and Les Grant delivered or doing some flying coach style sessions at club junior sessions to give junior coaches more ideas and/or practically demonstrate some of the sessions in the manual using the equipment bag.
IL: The bag and manual has been very useful for our juniors sessions
HP: Coaches can’t give up much time so a morning session /workshop with Les Grant on a Saturday, for just a few hours might work better.
IL: I’m going to take it back to the coaches to see what they would want.
Volunteer & Parent Support – First Aid
JS: Let’s do a first aid course; we definitely have enough people interested.
BJ: Could we do it at Leeds Postal where Kirkstall Harriers are have socials/meetings?
JS: Yes, no problem. Probably wouldn’t charge either.
LP: The costs for our course are roughly around £400-500.
BJ: We will get it organised.
Volunteer & Parent Support – Whole Club Development
BJ: Lucy Archer is going to deliver a whole club development workshop for Leeds clubs.
LP: Needs to be central for everyone.
ACTION: LA to email details to BJ to disseminate to all clubs
Volunteer & Parent Support – LAN Volunteer Programme
JS: I am still dealing on this just haven’t done a lot as I’ve been busy getting married!
BJ: Louise can you still support
LP: Yes.
ACTION: JS to recap with LP
Increasing Recreational Participation
BJ: We’ve still got ‘Get Running’ Run England business card that we can attached sticky labels to with details of beginner/ intermediate running sessions on the back .i.e. time and date.
Let us know if you would like some. We are continuing to send the cards out to those clubs that used them as part of the Leeds beginners running project.
BJ: Holly is send out to clubs.
ACTION: Clubs interested to contact Holly.
Satellite Clubs
LP: Satellite Clubs is a new Sport England Intervention. The vision is to have extensions of a community clubs on a school, college or community sites. The Satellite Club Intervention is aimed at secondary school aged children. There are funds to support clubs that are interested in setting up a satellite club. The funds are to finance things such as initial coaching fees, initial venue hire if required, coaching qualifications to up skill volunteers to take on the role etc.
LP: We’ve met with Andy and his son, Ben. Ben is interested in delivering a Satellite Club at Farnley Academy where LAN funded coaching sessions last academic year.
Sharks
IL: We delivered sessions through the summer terms that have been very successful which we would like to continue. The sessions targeted primary aged children. However we could target secondary schools if there’s funding available.
Lions
DH: We have a waiting list for the lions however the ages in predominately primary agedchildren. However we have secured some Sportivate funding through working with Leeds City Council, Club Devel9opment Officer, Andrew Wilson.
ACTIONS: LP to follow-up with Ian Legg.
School Club Links
BJ: We were going to have school certificates and Shaun had drafted something up.
LP: I’m not sure where we got to with that I don’t mind dropping Shaun an email to find out.
ACTION: LP to contact Shaun Mulhern.
