Learning styles – how do you learn best

Below are a number of different situations. Read each situation carefully and circle the answer that best describes what you think you would do or what you would prefer to do.

1. You are not sure whether a word should be spelled ‘assessment’ or ‘assesment’.

  1. You look it up in the dictionary.
  2. You say the word to yourself and try to work out the spelling from how it sounds.
  3. You try to see the word in your mind and imagine how it looks.
  4. You write down both spellings and then choose the one that looks right.

2. You want to learn to cook something your friend made for you. You would prefer:

  1. your friend to write out the recipe for you
  2. your friend to tell you how to make it
  3. your friend to show you how to make it while you watch
  4. to try it out on your own at home one day.

3. You buy a new DVD player. You want to learn to use it so you:

  1. read the manual it comes with
  2. read the manual it comes with
  3. watch the video it came with explaining how to use it
  4. play around with it until you figure it all out yourself.

4. Your friend wants to teach you how to play a new game. You want him to:

  1. give you time to quickly read the rules before you start playing
  2. explain the rules to you before you play
  3. watch your friend play with someone else before you play
  4. play a few practice games with you and explain the rules to you as you play.

5. You are going to visit someone. You have their address but you don’t know how to get there. You would like them to:

  1. write down directions and email them to you
  2. tell you how to get there over the phone
  3. draw a map and email it to you
  4. meet you somewhere so you can go together

Most of us like a combination of learning styles. We might like to listen and watch while learning something new. Or we might like to read and then do.
