Learning Scenarios—Sweetwood Psychology

1. Little Timothy Haynes is the new student in class. He seems very shy and does not have any friends. His teacher decides to help Timothy out by order pizzas for him at lunch—hey this sounds like a great ad for Pizza Hut. Timothy, after receiving the pizzas finds he has new friends.

  1. Billy is a hyperactive child. His teacher wants him to settle down for more than fifteen minutes at a time. Everyday she has tried to calm Billy, but nothing seems to work. She knows that Billy loves Power Rangers and has purchased 5 packs of Power Ranger cards and a Power Ranger action figure. She also taped Power Ranger programs. Using BEHAVIORISM with rewards and punishment and schedules of reinforcement, design a program for Billy’s teacher which uses operant conditioning for Billy to have him less hyperactive within a week.
  1. David is a cruel human and buys a dog to perform bizarre experiments upon. He purchases a rattle and a straw. Strapping the dog into a chair, he blows through the straw into the dogs eyes while shaking the rattle. After fifteen trials, the dog blinks when he only shakes the rattle. He shakes a bag of unpopped popcorn and the dog blinks again. He rustles a bag of potato chips and the dog blankly stares at him. After thirty trials of shaking the rattle without blowing air into the dog’s face, the dog no longer blinks when David shakes the rattle.

What happens when he rustles the popcorn?

What happens when he rustles the potato chips?

What happens after the thirty trials with no air in the face?

  1. Jamie has the flu. After waking up, she prepares a breakfast of greasy sausage and eggs. She begins to feel nauseous and lies down. She then is rudely awoken by the urge to wretch. Five weeks later, she no longer has the flu, but she still feels ill whenever she smells, sees, or thinks about sausage and eggs. How is this taste aversion to sausage and eggs classically conditioned (learned)?
  1. Using the concept of positive transfer and learning strategies, explain how Lana Lane—who knows six chords on a guitar—can learn three songs in a relatively short period of time. Three months later, Lana decides to try the piano and has a very difficult time learning music at all.

  1. Mike has three sons with him: Greg, Peter, and Bobby. The boys are building a new groovy clubhouse and Mike helps them. He tells them that he will give each of them an extra three dollars in their allowance to fix their bikes if they help in a positive manner. Greg does everything as Mike tells him. He is obedient and a leader. Peter sits on his duff and does little. He lips off to Mike with his ever-changing voice, and threatens to leave and play with his friend, Buddy Hinton. Bobby deliberately becomes lethargic. He orders people around needlessly and claims to be the “safety monitor.” After the task is completed, Greg is told he will be given $3.00. Peter is told he is lucky he has an allowance. Bobby is told he will not be given anything, to which he whines and says that he was inspecting safety and was too young to help and too weak to hold up boards and Peter was frightening him. Mike caves and gives Bobby the money.
