Learning Plan 1 by Meredith Robins

Title: Gummy Bear Sort and Graph!

Grade: Kindergarten

Objective:

1) Participants will sort objects based on the attribute of color.

2) Participants will graph the number of each object.

Related SOL’s:

K.17 The student will sort and classify objects according to similar attributes (size, shape, and color).

K. 15 The student will display objects and information, using object graphs, pictorial graphs and tables.

Materials: 1 Ziploc bag of gummy bears for each student (20 per bag), sorting sheet, graphing sheet, crayons (yellow, orange, red, white, green)

Duration of Lesson: 45 minutes (Includes modeling sorting and graphing by the teacher and having the students complete both worksheets.)

Procedures:

1) Model sorting gummy bears based on color before the students receive materials.

2) After modeling sorting the gummy bears based on color, model graphing using the whiteboard. Draw columns for each color (yellow, orange, red, white, and green) on the whiteboard and model graphing based on the number of gummy bears for each color.

3) Have the students return to their seats and hand out the sorting sheet. Once students have correctly sorted each color, pass out the graphing sheet and allow them to begin graphing.

4) Tell the students to place one real gummy bear on the gummy bear picture, remove one real bear, and then color in the picture bear on their sheet. Continue until each gummy bear is removed from the sheet and placed back into the Ziploc bag.

5) Collect both worksheets and bags of gummy bears. Staple the Ziploc bags to the graphing worksheets.

Adaptations: For students with learning disabilities this activity could be modified by having the learning disabled student work with an academically stronger student. For students who have been identified as gifted this activity could be made more challenging and time consuming by giving these individuals more than 20 gummy bears in their Ziploc bags. In addition, the teacher could purposely not place any green (or any specific color) gummy bears in their bags.

Evaluation:

Formative: Teacher will observe students sorting and graphing the gummy bears while they complete the activity.

Summative: Using the graphing worksheet and Ziploc bag of gummy bears, check to see if the number of gummy bears of each color matches the students graphing worksheet.
