Registration Form for the Keele HEA CPD Route to HEA Fellowship

Your registration form is part of your HEA Fellowship application. It allows you to provide an overview of your career to date in HE. Your entries on the form can be brief as you may expand on some of these as you develop your evidence. You do not need to include everything that you have done or achieved; it is important to select entries that are most relevant to your application for HEA recognition. Please note that the emphasis for Fellowships is your development as an educator to enhance student learning. Section A

The purpose of this section is for you to supply all factual details. You will need to have decided which category of Fellowship you are applying for; you can discuss this with your Line Manager/Head of School or the Keele HEA CPD Route lead. We need to know that your line manager or Head of School endorses your registration.

Please could you indicate how you intend to submit your evidence: written application, or professional discussion with supplementary electronic evidence, and the date you intend to submit. You are given the option to submit for one of two dates each year.

Section B

Here briefly outline your current roles and responsibilities at Keele. You will need to focus on what you do with regard to enhancing learning and teaching. Activities need to be relevant to the category of Fellowship applied for; you will be able to expand on these in your evidence. The focus needs to be on enhancing learning and teaching. If you are applying for Senior or Principal Fellow this focus needs to be on leading and influencing learning and teaching at School, Faculty, Institutional and the wider HE context.

Section C

In this section we would like you to briefly outline your teaching and learning roles and responsibilities in Higher Education in the last 5 -10 years. Your outline needs to be relevant to the category of Fellowship applied for; you will be able to expand on this in your evidence. The focus needs to be on your contribution to enhancing learning and teaching or if you are applying for Senior or Principal Fellow this needs to be on leading and influencing learning and teaching at School, Faculty, institutional and the wider HE context. You can include pedagogic research, publications and presentations.

Section D

Your evidence for HEA recognition will need to show that you have engaged in professional development activities that have contributed to enhancing your learning and teaching practice and the practice of others within the last 5 -10years.

Section E

Please provide the names of your two referees for AFHEA, FHEA, SFHEA or three advocates for PFHEA. Guidance for referees and mentors can be found in the HEA CPD handbook on the LPDC website or on the HEA website,

Please sign and date your application and forward it to your Head of School/Line Manager for endorsing and signing. You Head of School will forward your application form to Rachel Rettinger at the LPDC and you will receive notice of its receipt.

Which category of Fellowship?

When considering which category of Fellowship to apply for please consider the following:

Associate Fellow of the HEA (AFHEA)

If you meet one of the following criteria and you have at least 2 years’ experience of teaching at FHEQ level 4 or above then you can apply for Associate Fellowship via the HEA CPD Route, e.g.:

i) support academic provision (e.g. learning technologists, learning developers

and learning resource/library staff).

ii) undertake demonstrator/technician roles that incorporate some teaching-related responsibilities.

iii) are experienced in relevant professional areas who may be new to teaching and/or supporting learning, or who have a limited teaching portfolio.

UK PSF criteria for the HEA category of AFHEA (Descriptor 1)

D1.1 Successful engagement with at least two of the five Areas of Activity plus A5:

A1 Design and plan learning activities and/or programmes of study

A2 Teach and/or support learning

A3 Assess and give feedback to learners

A4 Develop effective learning environments and approaches to student support and guidance

A5 Engage in continuing professional development in subjects/disciplines and their pedagogy, incorporating research, scholarship and the evaluation of professional practices

D1.2 Successful engagement in appropriate teaching and practices related to these Areas of Activity

D1.3 Appropriate Core Knowledge and understanding of at least K1 and K2

D1.4 A commitment to appropriate Professional Values in facilitating others’ learning

D1.5 Relevant professional practices, subject and pedagogic research and/or scholarship within the above activities

D1.6 Successful engagement, where appropriate, in professional development activity related to teaching, learning and assessment responsibilities

Fellow of the HEA (FHEA)

If you meet one of the following criteria and you have at least 2 years teaching experience at FHEQ Level 4 or above then you can apply for Fellowship via the HEA CPD Route, e.g.:

i) Early career academics.

ii) Academic-related and/or support staff holding substantive teaching and learning responsibilities.

iii) Experienced academics relatively new to UK higher education.

iv) Staff with (sometimes significant) teaching-only responsibilities including, for example, within work-based settings.

UK PSF criteria for the HEA category of FHEA (Descriptor 2)

2.1 Successful engagement across all five Areas of Activity:

Senior Fellow of the HEA (SFHEA)

If you meet one of the following criteria and you have at least 2 years’ experience of leadership related to teaching and learning at FHEQ level 4 or above then you can apply for Senior Fellowship via the HEA CPD Route, e.g.:

i) Experienced staff able to demonstrate, impact and influence through, for example, responsibility for leading, managing or organisingprogrammes, subjects and/or disciplinary areas.

ii) Experienced subject mentors and staff who support those new to teaching.

iii) Experienced staff with departmental and/or wider teaching and learning support advisory responsibilities within an institution.

UK PSF criteria for the HEA category of SFHEA (Descriptor 3)

D3.1 Successful engagement across all five Areas of Activity:

A2 Teach and/or support learning

A3 Assess and give feedback to learners

A4 Develop effective learning environments and approaches to student support and guidance

  • Award or module handbook developed by you
  • Award Monitoring form completed by you
  • Evidence of driving forward the Keele Graduate agenda within your area
  • Evidence of providing mentoring or development opportunities for staff who are teaching or supporting learning
  • Your strategic response to National Student Survey results for your area
  • Evidence of co-ordination roles in relation to student feedback, for example standardisation and moderation
  • Evidence of managing the development of learning support, e.g.: Organising personal tutoring
  • Setting up online environments
  • Your facilitation of a learning and teaching related professional development at Keele University
  • Evidence of scholarly activity, e.g.: research paper, conference or journal contribution

Principal Fellow of the HEA (PFHEA)

If you meet one of the following criteria and you have at least 5 years’ experience of learning and teaching at FHEQ level 4 or above then you can apply for Principal Fellowship via the HEA CPD Route, e.g.:

i) Highly experienced and/or senior staff with wide-ranging academic or academic-related strategic leadership responsibilities in connection with key aspects of teaching and supporting learning

ii) Staff responsible for institutional strategic leadership and policy-making in the area of teaching and learning

iii) Staff who have strategic impact and influence in relation to teaching and learning that extends beyond their own institution

UK PSF criteria for the HEA category of PFHEA (Descriptor 4)

D.1 Active commitment to and championing of all Dimensions of the Framework, through work with students and staff, and in institutional developments

D.2 Successful, strategic leadership to enhance student learning, with a particular, but not necessarily exclusive, focus on enhancing teaching quality in institutional, and/or (inter)national settings

D.3 Establishing effective organisational policies and/or strategies for

supporting and promoting others (e.g. through mentoring, coaching) in delivering high quality teaching and support for learning

D.4 Championing, within institutional and/or wider settings, an integrated approach to academic practice (incorporating, for example, teaching, learning, research, scholarship, administration etc.)

D.5 A sustained and successful commitment to, and engagement in, continuing professional development related to academic, institutional and/or other professional practices

Examples of relevant evidence for PFHEA

  • Developed or substantially contributed to the development of a learning and teaching strategy underpinned by professional values
  • Played a major role in conducting an institution-wide peer review of a teaching scheme incorporating the UKPSF which is then further recognised in promotion structures
  • Developed and implemented innovative teaching and learning approaches within your organisation in response to the specific needs of the students
  • Led institution-wide work on quality enhancement initiatives, for example in response to the National Student Survey
  • Provided mentoring and/or coaching to staff engaged in learning and teaching related activities
  • Been involved in the national or international conduct and/or dissemination of andragogic innovation
  • Taken a significant role in promoting professional development in relation to learning, teaching and assessment
  • Taken a leading role in key institutional agendas, such as the Keele Graduate Attributes
  • Your leadership of a learning and teaching related professional development at Keele University
  • Publications you have written or co-written
  • Relevant committee work
