Ages 9-13Prerequisite: JY class or previous experience

The 8-foot Optimist is the international standard in youth sail training. The “Opti” is specifically designed for junior sailors under 120lbs in weight. We offer morning and afternoon Optimist classes for beginners, intermediates, and expert racers. At the beginning of each session the class will be broken up into three groups based on skill level. Boat ownership is encouraged but not required.

Flying Junior and 420 / Laser and Radial _

Ages: 12-17 Beginner and Intermediate levels

FJs: The standard in high school and collegiate sailing, this 2-person boat will be used to teach safety and good seamanship in a social setting. This course will focus on intermediate skills, but will also accommodate beginners, who will sail as crew before steering. Sailors advance from this class to the Race Team during the school year. 420s are very similar.

Lasers: The ultimate in single-handed sailing! The laser can support a wide range of sailors from 115 lbs and up. Sailors are encouraged to bring their own boats to this class although currently the SFYC has several boats for class use. Sailors interested in this class should be comfortable sailing by themselves and getting wet! Laser radials have a smaller sail and are for sailors 115 to 160 lbs.

J24

Ages 8-17Boat: J24

With three J24s ready to go the Bay will be your playground. In this class there will be 4-6 students per boat and 1 instructor. Safety, seamanship skills and fun will be the focal point of this class. Navigation, anchoring, knots, and becoming a better helmsperson will also be introduced in this class. Last summer this was the class to be in and this summer is no different.
