Leaner, Cleaner and Greener –

Delivering Low Carbon Planning

24th September 2012, 9.30 – 12.30

A workshop for Leaders, Planning Committee members and other Elected Members

West Midlands Councils and Sustainability West Midlands invite you to a workshop to help elected members to operate the planning system more effectively and efficiently via low carbon planning. You will have an opportunity to understand how local development can become leaner, cleaner and greener for the benefit of residents and communities and in order to meet their own sustainability targets.

So what is Low Carbon Planning?

Energy prices are rising and increasingly variable, hitting households and businesses alike. At the same time, Government is working to address the challenge of ensuring a secure, reliable and sufficient supply of energy for the UK. Renewable energy is only part of the solution. Intelligent, energy efficient building design can greatly reduce the need to use energy in the first place. Low Carbon Planning is about assessing applications for their low carbon credentials, the first step is to reduce the need for energy in the first place, and to make everything that does need fuel as efficient as possible, once the energy load has been minimized then the use of renewable energy is considered.

This interactive workshop will provide an introduction to energy efficient and renewable energy technologies, and outline the role of local authorities in encouraging proposals for new buildings and developments that can be run with lower energy costs and greater comfort for occupants. We will provide examples of practicable yet innovative low-carbon developments already completed in the West Midlands.

Expert speakers will cover:

- The national policy context, including latest developments in areas such as the National Planning Policy Framework and the Government’s Green Deal

- Local planning policy options for supporting low carbon, energy efficient development

- Approaches to “lean and clean” design

- Introduction to low carbon energy technologies

- Practical case studies in the West Midlands
