Quality of Life and The Battle of Franklin Leadership Experience

Session Planning Team: Mayra Zimmer (LMT 2015) (County Planning Chair), Kem Hinton (LMT 2010) (Alumni Vice Chair), Nancy Conway (LMT 2002) (Alumni Vice Chair), Mindy Tate (LMT 2003), Kurt Winstead (LMT 2015), and Dan Ryan (LMT 2004).

Session Narrative: Day 1 of the session will focus on an overview of the quality of life amenities of Williamson County. From a regional standpoint, we will explore how Williamson County leaders, agencies, employers, and communities work to promote economic growth in the region. Topics will include parks and recreation, continuing education and how the Civil War history of this region continues to play an important role in the present day development of Williamson County. Day 2 will provide a unique opportunity to study leadership based on The Battle of Franklin.

Session Learning Objectives:

1.  To reflect on the past, present and future influence of the history of Williamson County that has been preserved to share with the new generation of Tennesseans.

2.  To develop an appreciation of the Williamson County parks and recreation for the quality of life amenities that they provide.

3.  To understand the value of leaders and community coming together to make decisions and for a common vision.

4.  To discover how the County partners with other regions for economic growth opportunities.

5.  To enhance each class member’s leadership skills through study of leadership exhibited during Battle of Franklin, with a special focus on emotional intelligence and communicating change.

Watching this short documentary before our workshop will give everyone a basic understanding of what happened at Franklin and allow for a much richer experience.

Tour of Battle of Franklin locations – Historian, author and Battle of Franklin expert, Professor Thomas Flagel will lead the group to actual locations where critical events took place before, during and after the Battle of Franklin, TN on November 30, 1863. During the tours, he will highlight significant people, places & events while focusing on leadership decisions that were made at one of the most decisive Civil War battles in our nation’s history. The goal of the tour and Professor Flagel’s discussion will be to draw comparisons to some of the challenges that Middle TN and its leadership face today.
