Lead: Why does The Epoch Times lie in public?

Summary: Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong, has been living in New York—the metropolis of America—for 15 years. Once Li Hongzhi brought together a group of literary prostitutes, publishing a newspaper called The Epoch Times. It was registered and set its headquarter in America, the place that enjoys a titular fame of press freedom. Through The Epoch Times, Li Hongzhi has told numerous lies with the excuse of press freedom. Sometimes he directly tells lies while sometimes the lies are told through the mouths of others. It is said that The Epoch Times has several versions in different languages, but nobody subscribes for it. Therefore, Li Hongzhi has to send them for free with the money he collected by improper means. The statement that Chinese government picked organs from living individuals who practiced Falun Gong is an example of the downright lies he has made through this newspaper. Actually, Li Hongzhi knows clearly that American people would not believe this lie. The U.S. Consulate in Shenyang, China, sent officers for an on-the-spot investigation about the hospital related in his newspaper. They came back and proved that the hospital (in Liaoning Province, China) didn’t have the ability of picking organs from living individuals at all.

The Ukraine scholar Gregory Globa (Григорий Глоба) deeply investigated and analyzed this issue, refuting Li Hongzhi and his lies on The Epoch Times with lots of facts. He specially wrote a booked called Falun Gong under the Shadow of Towering Oxycoccos (ФАЛУНЬГУН ПОД СЕНЬЮ РАЗВЕСИСТОЙ КЛЮКВЫ). The title of this book is relatively implicit. Oxycoccos is commonly known as cranberry, a dwarf shrub which can never grow into a towering tree. Gregory Globa uses it as a metaphor of Falun Gong, meaning that however they overstate themselves, they will never make a difference, just like a cranberry. Staffs of Falun Gong make up lies out of their surmise. These unrealistic remarks certainly can’t be convincing. The Epoch Times hasalready registered in the US and calls itself media of ordinary people, but it goes so far as to tell lies in public. This is decided by its standpoint—the founder of this newspaper is actually the founder of a cult. Discerning people know that The Epoch Times is originally a newspaper with an obvious background of a cult.

Here is the abstract of Falun Gong under the Shadow of Towering OxycoccosbyGregory Globa.

Introduction of the original book

Readers for the Chinese version of The Epoch Times that is distributed for free can only be Chinese citizens. It is counter-intuitive to tell Chinese students and businessmen how terrible Chinese people’s life is by some foreigners who have never been to China.

Falun Gong practitioners often quote the American saying that in Sujiatun District, Shenyang, China, there is a concentration camp to persecute their comrades. The human rights defendersChebanenkoand Petukhovsent themselves to Sujiatun for field research and found that there was no concentration camp at all but a hospital which practiced Chinese traditional treatment on the remedy for thrombus. However, Falun Gong followers didn’t believe them. They would rather believe in the foreigners who had never been to China.

Since Falun Gong members regard all the Chinese official information as lies, the author of this book will not quote any Chinese official information or any expert testimony which is unfavorable to them, but will suppose all the materials from Falun Gong members are facts, and then make conclusions and analysis on them. If the result proves their statements to be illogic or contradictory, that means they (Falun Gong members) disrespect readers. I will tell the truth and ask Falun Gong practitioners not to spread those misstatements.

Nomadic concentration camp

The Epoch Times said that Sujiatun Hospital picked organs from living individuals. At the beginning of the year 2005, there were 10000 Falun Gong members imprisoned there. By the beginning of the next year, the number of these “prisoners” was only 6000. That’s to say, 4000 people had been picked organs within one year, 11 people per day. To complete this task, even if doctors there didn’t have other operations, this hospital still had to possess at least four operation rooms. However, the witness Anne and her ex-husband who had worked there as a surgeon even didn’t know how many operation rooms it had. On May 20th, 2006, Anne said that they performed three operations every day, which actually denied her previous statement because they couldn’t “deal with” 4000 people within one year at this pace.

To justify herself, Anne had to add that other hospitals also performed this kind of operation. But what are the names of those hospitals? Whether they have the condition for this operation or not? Do they have crematories as well? Why didn’t other so-called witnesses mention that? Nobody gives answers to these questions.

Unconvincing witness

The prerequisite of being a witness is to “have seen”, but all the witnesses mentioned by Falun Gong members are those who never saw any “crime”

Witness 1: Journalist—Peter. Peter said he had contacted with many people and had studied lots of materials during a three-year period. However, what had he studied? Who had he contacted with? Why there were no photos or video materials? We didn’t know.

Witness 2: Anne. She said she was an employee in this hospital and her ex-husband was the brain surgeon there. From her testimony we could see that though she worked in that hospital for 5 years, she never saw the so-called “evidence of the crime”, not even once. She only heard about that from her ex-husband and friends.

Witness 3: An anonymous military doctor. The only thing this so-called ex-soldier who was in charge of logistical support in Shenyang Military Region really saw by himself was “A train headed for the direction of Jilin from Tianjin, holding 7000 people. It was escorted by soldiers and people in that train were fixed to the roof by hands. But weather this so-called witness had been to Sujiatun Hospital was not mentioned at all.

Witness 4: A person of Korean nationality with the family name “Jin”. Jin said one of his friends whose family name was “Yu” was invited back to that hospital to help with picking-organs operations after retirement since the number of patients was too large. But it was when Jin was applying visa in South Korea that he recognized this doctor in a picture exhibition of Falun Gong. Picking organs that was shown in a picture was just a rehearsal.

Two David (writers of Report of Picking Organs from Living People, David Matas and David Kilgour) thought field research was not important.

Chebanenkoand Petukhovwere not the first to visit Sujiatun Hospital. Before them, the U.S. consul-general in Shenyang had already been there, but didn’t found anything special from other hospitals. The human rights defenderWu Hongda who resided in America, also sent someone to do field research in Sujiatun after being rejected to meet those so-called witnesses. He didn’t find any concentration camp either.

The two David (Canadians) said, they knew these people had done field research when they were writing this report, but they didn’t mention it because they didn’t believe it necessary. That’s to say, the result from American consul-general’s research doesn’t matter, but the testimony from witnesses matters a lot.

Survey method and survey logic: ignoring legal evidence but convincing people with politics

There are two kinds of evidence by law: direct evidence and circumstantial evidence. In fact, circumstantial evidence cannot prove whether someone commits a crime. However, all the evidence listed in the “Report” were circumstantial ones, that is, “I heard” or “I talked with someone”, etc. Writers of this “Report” are famous experts, but they don’t try to convince readers by legal evidence, but by politics; they don’t use evidence to prove a crime, but leave an impression on readers that crimes are possible. Analogy, exaggeration, metaphor and theoretical speculation are their favorable tricks; “possible”, “perhaps”, “seem”, “can be deduced” are the most common sentence pattern in their writing.

Self-contradictory evidence

In Section24 “Death Toll” in this “Report”, it said “Until December 22nd, 2006, we have affirmed that 3006 people were persecuted to death”, “The 5th and 6th groups of people who have been affirmed dead are also victims of picking organs. The number of this kind of people is around 300.” But Anne’s testimony showed that there were more than 2000 people executed in Sujiatun Hospital just during the two-year period from 2001 to 2003. Anne’s friend who was a doctor even said that at least 4000 people were executed in Sujiatun Hospital. According to the anonymous military doctor, there were 36 concentration camps like Sujiatun Hospital in China. The updated version of “Report” said in China there were 41500 organ transplant surgeries without clear sources, which were guessed as surgeries for Falun Gong members by the writers of “Report”.

According to the data for 2002 from “Falun Dafa Information Center”, there were 20000 Falun Gong members forced to participate in a three-year reform. Then, until 2010, these people should have regained freedom for a long time. If not, those international rights organizations who pay close attention to China would hardly wait to publicize this news. It is said that there are another 1000 people locked in bedlams and another 500 serving a long-term sentence. Even though all these 1500 Falun Gong members were picked organs, this number was not consistent with the figure 2000, population picked organs in only Sujiatun Hospital during two years.

Telephone inquiries becoming proof of genocide

Researchers mentioned in the “Report” usually called the hospital to learn about whether they picked organs. Strangely, after the publicity of “Research”, doctors were still willing to answer such questions when researchers called again for this issue and the answers given by them didn’t have any change. Don’t Chinese doctors and law enforcement officers have any sense of confidentiality at all? Besides, if anybody can answer these questions, then the secret found by writers of “Report” is not a secret at all. Furthermore, in China, even though the source of organ transplantation is legal, it is secret as well. Therefore, it is so illogical for these doctors and law enforcement officers to talk about such questions with strangers by telephone. Even if these phone calls are real, when we add up all the numbers got from calls, it’s still very different from the total number of 45000 organs unknown.

Unconvincing evidence

A woman died in a police substation. When her relatives arrived, her organs had already been picked out and body was sent to the crematorium. Since she had already been cremated, how could her relatives know her organs were picked out? Could it be said that the police tell her relatives by themselves?

The “Report” said Falun Gong members were tortured to the edge of death. However, organs of such half-dead men cannot be transplanted, because most of their organs have been damaged, which become useless. The “Report” said these Falun Gong members’ brains were taken away, but brains cannot be transplanted.

Conclusion in the original book

Dear Falun Gong members, you always blame us for revealing the standpoints and opinions from Chinese government. In this book, what I quote is the resource totally from your own hands. You are all kind people who, in fact, are not good at making black propaganda. Therefore, the effects of your work are always bad. This dirty issue doesn’t deserve your efforts.

Chapter 1 Bread, Salt, Publicity…

Many old people—not only scholars or government officers, but more ordinary citizens who visited capitalist countries in Soviet era—will talk about their experience about the polite but stubborn care they received there, which came from not only western intelligence departments, but also other related “social organizations”, “information analysis organizations”, “rights organizations” or “religious organizations”. Such “attentive care” left a very unpleasant impression on people. After all, cold war has been a history, which is rather pleasing…But perhaps I’m wrong. I once put forward that people who struggled for democracy (though failed) in 1991 would never expect similar “attentive care” that foreigners who came to independent Ukraine have received.

Fight for China: Dnipropetrovsk Front

Citizens have been used to the phenomenon that some people publicized “Methods of Practicing Falun Dafa” to people in Dnipropetrovsk in a tent on Lenin Square. This time, when I passed by the square, I found something new in the tent. Those were some newspapers and books with hieroglyphic on the cover. According to the notes on the back of The Epoch Times, they were published by a publisher called “Kyoto Humanistic Education”, with 2000 copies in print, Chinese version, and 16 pages in each copy. They had registered, with phone number and email of advertisement department—all seemed quite strict and regular. But the address of the editorial office was changed into an ordinary P.O. BOX No.(post office box number), just like the situation of army and “secret” department several years ago…. I was markedly surprised. Could it be said that people in Dnipropetrovsk had reached such a realm through spiritual practice that they could understand the original version of Oriental wisdom? The answer was no. “Practitioners” fervently explained to me that it was specially prepared for Chinese guests.

But, if you believe Falun Gong followers’ words that it has a history of thousands of years, could it be said that Chinese people will not know the traditional Chinese power which originated from China itself without the help from ardent Ukrainians? Except for this power, don’t Chinese citizens know that their country is a brilliant example of dictatorship of the Communist Party and that if they accuse the leaders of genocide, persecuting and suppressing just the right amount of 100 million people and picking their organs from living individuals, criminal responsibilities shall be affixed? I wanted to add that “Bear runs wild on Red Square” was the situation in another era. But I still withheld from slip of the tongue in time.

Schools in Dnipropetrovsk enjoy a high status and a good fame, so thousands of students come here to study from other Asian and African countries, including those from China. Immigrants from developing countries are famous for their law-abiding habit which is developed in their own country. They become the prey that the promotion centers covet. It is impossible to advocate these things to young people on the territory of China….We can imagine that how these young Chinese citizens feel when they come across such formative education.

In my humble opinion, with regard to the sincerity and good intentions of the “anti-persecution warriors”, I want to say that Ukrainians who have never been to China tell native Chinese people how bad it is to live there and what is wrong in China is somewhat weird.

Savage torture on the street

I’ve written more than once on the topics of Falun Gong in my city, but the followers of “tour of Falun Gong practition” don’t want to know more about themselves at all. Not so long ago, my old acquaintances—some followers of Falun Gong from Dnipropetrovsk—offered me a big package of materials, so that let me thoroughly understand what they are and how to report them correctly. Some of my colleagues also received such packages with the same topics. Besides, there was another CD including nearly 800 files, most of which talked about some confusing laymen words like “towering cranberry”. The most impressive evidence about Chinese “totalitarianism” in this CD was those disgusting pictures, on which Chinese government tortured Falun Gong members rampantly.
