Session title:
Something from Nothing: Making Connections and Opening Doors
Session description for program:

Services outlined in this session are based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Students who are homeless lack many basic needs, such as air, water, and food, as well as, security needs which include financial stability, gas and electric, updated health care and consistent shelter. We believe that addressing these needs will help students increase their academic performance, as well as, alleviate stress placed on parents/caregivers. This session will give participants thorough descriptions of six Ferguson-Florissant School District programs that can be implemented within their school district.
Provide a minimum of three training objectives/goals for the participants in this session. For examp...
Objective/Goal #1Participants will learn that making community connections is essential in connecting homeless families to local resources.
Objective/Goal #2Participants will have a better understanding of why identifying the needs of their McKinney-Vento school community (parents and students) is necessary in program development.
Objective/Goal #3Participants will learn that implementing a new program or modifying an existing program can be achieved with limited resources (staff, revenue, software, time).

The presentation theme that we selected is “Program Development” and we have identified three essential elements as key to our presentation. Those elements are creating collaborations, exploring one’s creative energy and implementation of solution focused programs. These three components are the basis to all six of the programs we will share in our presentation. All of these programs have the potential to be replicated and provide both direct and indirect service to a broad population of students and parents, thus using what we believe is the best social work practice.
How does this session contribute to the advancement, extension and enhancement of the professional...
This session Making Connections and Opening Doors will allow professionals to use their existing skill set to explore new ways of reaching McKinney-Vento (MV) families. We have put good social work practice at the forefront of our program implementation. For example, increasing connections and collaborations with other community organizations expands the availability of resources for families, while decreasing the chances of duplication of services. Addressing identified gaps in homeless students and families while maintaining confidentiality, integrity and hope have allowed us to advance our skills by focusing on providing timely, creative need based programs, redirecting interventions of services for MV students and using of problem solving methods to address multiple needs.
