Just weeks after the LDV T60 Ute achieved the covetedfive-star ANCAP Safety Rating, LDV’s first foray into the booming SUV sector, the D90, has also joined the ranks of five-star ANCAP safety rated cars.

“The LDV T60 set our safety benchmark with its five-star ANCAP safety rating and, with the D90, LDV has proven that the highest safety rating is now LDV’s minimum standard for new vehicles launched in Australia,” says Dinesh Chinnappa, General Manager of LDV Automotive Australia. “The D90 not only meets the stringent criteria set by ANCAP for the 5 star rating, with technology such as road sign recognition, it reveals the next generation of road safety features.”

“Drawing on the resources of one of the world’s largest car makers, LDV’s parent SAIC, as well as its own design and engineering prowess, LDV is producing a new generation of vehicles, heralded by the T60 and confirmed by the D90, that offer 5 star safety with value, technology, advanced connectivity, impressive features and comfort,” says Mr. Chinnappa.

The D90 marks LDV’s first foray into the SUV market, first seen in Australia back in March while undergoing clandestine testing and local calibration for its advanced automatic road sign recognition system prior to its world debut at the 2017 Shanghai International Motor Show.

At just over five metres long and nearly two metres wide, the LDV D90 is generously proportioned, which translates into a spacious interior for seven seats, or, with the two rear rows of seats folded, a load swallowing 2.3 cubic metres of space, meeting the expectations of a full-size SUV.

Power comes from a light and efficient turbocharged petrol engine that produces 165 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque from a commendably low 2500 rpm with a flat curve that means peak torque runs to 3500 rpm, ideal for an SUV. Gearboxes are allsix speed electronically controlled automatics. The drivetrains are a choice of two-wheel drive or a four-wheel drive system that not only has the essentials of high and low range, but also has terrain selection and an electronic rear differential lock. Despite the size and ability of the D90, it still manages to offer a combined fuel consumption figure of 10.2 l/100 km for the 2WD variant and 10.9 l/100 km for the 4WD. To further reduce fuel consumption in urban driving the LDV D90 has automatic engine stop/start, which means the engine is only running when it is required, thus cutting fuel consumption.

With the four-wheel drive system onspecific LDV D90 models, the driver may either allow the capable four-wheel drive system, which includes an electronic differential lock, work out for itself the best plan of attack for difficult conditions or, by selecting from the centre console mounted control, tell the LDV D90 which conditions to optimise its settings. The terrain selection includes rock, mud, sand and snow.

The LDV D90 has a host of features to alert the driver to danger, such as blind spot warning, lane wander alert and traffic sign alerts, which automatically spots road signs such as speed limits and stop signs and brings them up in the instrument display. The D90 has the latest technology to assist the driver in an emergency, such as autonomous braking, front collision warning and the latest range of technology that combine under electronic stability control that works not just to stop the driver losing control of the D90 but also steps in to stop the vehicle rolling. The third tier of safety equipment, that are designed to protect the occupants in the event of an accident, is headlined by six airbags and supported by advanced energy absorbing technology around the rigid passenger safety cell.

The LDV D90 launches in four versions. The D90 Mode is two-wheel drive with a six-speed automatic gearbox; the LDV D90 Deluxe is available with a choice of the two-wheel drive/automatic gearbox combination or the four-wheel drive with terrain selection matched to the six-speed automatic gearbox. Topping the range is the fittingly named LDV D90 Luxe, which is equipped as standard with four-wheel drive with terrain selection matched to the six-speed automatic gearbox. The four-wheel drive versions all have an electronically locking differential and keyless entry and exit with smart keys.

The list of luxury, comfort and convenience features in the LDV D90 is as long as it is comprehensive, whether it is the driver’s seat in the top variant that is heated, cooled and massages the driver, the cruise control across the range that is adaptive, not one but two display screens, a massive 12-inchtouch screen for entertainment and communications in the centre of the dashboard, and a multi-function eight inch one for the instrument display ahead of the driver.

In addition to the formidable range of elite standard equipment in the range-opening D90 Mode, the D90 Deluxe gains luxury items such as a sunroof; dual zone climate control air conditioning; ambient lighting; luggage rack; leather steering wheel; hands free opening tailgate; a driver’s seat that is eight-way adjustable, four-way lumbar support; leather upholstery for the first and second rows of seats, eight speaker audio system.

The LDV D90 Luxe lives to its role as the flagship of the range with equipment above the Deluxethat includes a 360-degree exterior camera;a panoramic sunroof; auto dimming mirror; Driver’s seat, eight-way adjustment, four-way lumbar support adjustment with heating, ventilation, massage and two memory settings; front passenger seat, four-way electronic adjustment, four-way lumbar support, heated; second row seats – electronic adjustment, heating; 12 speaker power audio system. D90 Luxe owners are greeted by puddle lights under each door, ambient lighting inside, a rear tailgate that opens itself at the wave of a foot under the bumper and may even plug in mains powered equipment with the 220 volt/150W power socket.

About LDV

LDV is a division of SAIC (Shanghai Automobile and Industrial Corporation), the largest and oldest automotive manufacturer in China as well as being the largest auto company on China’s share market. A Fortune Global 500 company, holding 46th position in the world’s largest companies on the list, SAIC sold more than 5.9 million vehicles in 2015, more than six million in 2016 and its set to top the seven million mark in 2017. It was the first company to enter joint ventures with non-Chinese car makers and has formed joint ventures with Volkswagen, IVECO and General Motors.

SAIC Motor's business covers the research, production and vehicle sales of both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. It also covers components including engines, gearboxes, powertrains, chassis, interior and exterior and miscellaneous electronic components, and logistics, vehicle telematics, second-hand vehicle transactions and auto finance services.

In 2009 SAIC acquired LDV, the light commercial vehicle division born from the Anglo Dutch commercial vehicle company Leyland DAF, a company formed from two of Europe’s leading commercial vehicle companies, Leyland Trucks and DAF Trucks. This purchase included the LDV V80 platform, a new platform developed for production in Europe and Asia. LDV is one of Europe's most recognised commercial vehicle brands. Not only has LDV had sales success as a cargo and passenger van, it has been selected by the British government for use by the Royal Bank, Royal Mail and as travel vehicles for the British Royal family. It is also the recipient of numerous international awards.
