Essay

I have worked in GI Endoscopy for over 28 years and have been a certified GI RN for 21 years. The field of GI Nursing has offered me numerous opportunities to help patients, educate the public, motivate my peers, participate in professional organizations and achieve my professional goals.

I have participated in numerous health fairs and programs to promote colon cancer awareness and treatment of GI diseases. My most rewarding experience working with the public was facilitating an IBD Support Group for seven years. When I participate in direct patient care, I think it is important to think of each patient as an individual and work with physicians to meet all patient need during each procedure.

I believe that certification in your specialty is not only a means of personal satisfaction, but a way to encourage certification to your peers. I have given numerous presentations on the importance of certification and organized study groups for those preparing for certification. It has been rewarding making a difference in this profession through leadership positions with SGNA (regional and national) and ABCGN.

In the last two years I have started working in the ambulatory setting, and I work closely with 16 ambulatory endoscopy centers. I enjoy the opportunity to share my passion for GI nursing, and encouraging others to get all they can from GI nursing.
