Launching Leaders is a self-paced leadership program that offers all students an introduction tocampus and community involvement while providing pathways to personal growth and development. Through the Launching Leaders program, participants will have the opportunity to build their network, develop their personal leadership style, strengthen their skill set, and implement their leadership abilities.
Participants will be awarded a leadership certificate and a small gift in recognition for theiraccomplishments at the annual Student Involvement Awards Reception in April.
why earn a leadership certificate?
The Launching Leaders program is designed to help you enhance and explore your leadership potential through theparticipation in a series of campus events, activities, and community service opportunities. Here is what you can gain by participating in the program:
- Form your support network through personal interactions.
- Identify your personal and professional values.
- Determine your individual areas of strength.
- Develop your personal leadership style.
- Strengthen your interpersonal leadership skills.
- Be recognized as a successful leader.
- Use your leadership to positively impact an organization, team or group.
- Build a competitive resume.
what is involved with the program?
Leadership Activities & Workshops
The Launching Leaders program offers activities and events throughout the year in which students may choose to participate. You are required to participate in 3 different activities within each of 5 categories to gain a broad array of experiences both on-campus and in the community.

New activities and events will be updated throughout the year. These can be found on the Student Involvement website or by opting in to the weekly email.
Leadership Capstone Experience
Students will also demonstrate effective leadership by actively participating in a leadership role either on-campus or in the community with a minimum commitment of 10 hours. You will write a reflection paper on the experience describing what you have learned about yourself and your leadership.
how do i earn a certificate?
Step 1. Visit Student Involvement (YU 155) and schedule an appointment with the Leadership Coordinator.
Step 2.Fill out the Launching Leadersinformation page.
Step 3.Review all the requirements to earn your certificate and begin to plan what activities or events you will attend.
Step 4. Complete 3 activities in each of the 5 categories. Write a short reflection on each experience. Document your progress on the corresponding Launching Leaders worksheet and submit to Student Involvement via email or by dropping it off in YU 155.
Step 5. Take an active role in a leadership experience on- or off-campus with a minimum commitment of 10 hours.
Step 6.Write a final reflection paper describing what you have learned from your experience in the program.
The Launching Leaders Certificate will be awarded upon completion of:
- Participation in 15 campus and/or community activities (3 in each of 5 categories).
- Minimum of 10 hours in an active leadership role.
- Written reflection paper on your experience shared with Student Involvement.
Who can participate?
Launching Leaders is designed for all students interested in becoming more involved in their community and utilizing and developing their leadership abilities in a positive way.
how long do i have to complete the program?
You can stop and start when you want to and can spread earning a certificate over several semesters or years. There is no pressure and this program allows for you to go at your own pace. You do not lose your progress at any point; all activities and hours will carry over semester to semester.

final reflection paper
You will find below prompts that will help you to construct your leadership reflection paper. They will help you understand how you function as a leader and give you specific examples of leadership that you can share with future employers, your peers, and teammates.
The reflection paper should be approximately 2 pages double spaced and allow you to formally verbalize your leadership philosophy for the future, be aware to turn in a document that has been given a great deal of thought and is professionally constructed.
personal leadership statement
The personal leadership statement will assist in defining who you are and what you stand for as a leader. Ask yourself the following questions to help create your personal statement:
- What values do you exemplify in your personal and/or professional life?
- What leadership skills are your biggest strengths and how do you carry them out day-to-day?
- How would you describe your leadership style?
- What lessons have you learned as a leader?
- How were you able to use your leadership skills to impact others or create positive change?
leadership in the future
As you begin your job search, how will you utilize your leadership skills in your new place of employment? These questions are meant to make you think about the projects or teams you have been a part of and how you functioned as a leader. Ask yourself the following questions:
- What is your immediate goal after graduating college?
- What type of work environment will you thrive in?
- What skills can you bring to your new place of employment?
- How can you use what you learned in the leadership development program in your future?
