All sources should be listed alphabetically.

  • 3 books (may include 1 encyclopedia, textbook counts too)
  • You may NOT use the internet, unless it is the database on the Solana Beach Library’s website (

Note: Format is provided for each type of source with examples. Pay attention to punctuation.

Book

Find this information:This is the info, NOT the format. See below!

  1. Name of author (last name first)

If there are two authors: Oehler, Jenny, and Jeanne Jones.

If there are three authors: Oehler, Jenny, Tracy McCabe, and Jeanne Jones.

If there are more than three authors: Oehler, Jenny, et al. (First name listed)

2. Title of the book (italics)

3. Place of publication (city)

4. Name of publisher

5. Year of publication (most recent year)

6. Page number(s) of the pages you used. If you used the whole book, then no page

numbers need to be listed.

7. Since this is a book in print, write print after page numbers.

Use the above information to make your bibliography look like this:

Oehler, Jenny. My Great Years of Teaching. Solana Beach: Free Spirit Publishing, 2000. 45,66-79. Print.

Encyclopedia Article

Find this information:

1. Name of the author of the article (if there is one). Usually found at the end or

beginning of the article. *If there is no author listed, begin with the article’s title.

2. Title of the article (in quotation marks)

3. Title of the encyclopedia (italics)

4. Year of publication (edition)

5. Page number(s)

6. Since this is an encyclopedia in print, write print after page numbers.

Internet

Find this information:

1.Editor (last name first) if provided

2. Author (last name first) if provided

3. Compiler(last name first) if provided

4. Title of web page in quotes

5. Medium of publication (Web)

6. Date accessed

1. Us the same format as the encyclopedia source.

Use the above information to make your bibliography look like this:

Videos/Films

  1. If there is an author, cite it like a book. If not, begin with the title.
  2. Title of video/film. (italics)
  3. State if it is a video or film.
  4. Publisher and/or producer and/or director—whatever’s listed.
  5. Date
  6. Write TV, VHS, or DVD after date.

Use the above information to make your bibliography look like this:

Magazine or Newspaper

Find this information:

1. Name of author (if there is one)

2. Title of article (in quotation marks)

3. Name of magazine or newspaper (italics)

4. Date of the magazine or newspaper

5. Page number(s) of the article

6. Since this info is in print, write Print after page numbers.

Use the above information to make your bibliography look like this:

Interviews

Get this info:

1. Name of person interviewed (last name first)

2. Personal interview

3. Date of interview

Use the above information to make your bibliography look like this:

Citation within the Text

You may also include citation within the text. The citation refers to the sources listed on the

bibliography. Example: “The students in Mrs. Oehler’s classes all scored A’s on the world history final”

(Oehler 94).

*You can also so use lectures, handouts, and surveys as sources. If you do, ask me for help in writing the bibliography.
