Course Schedule

The purpose of Latin 20 is to complete your exposure to the remaining essential elements of Latin grammar; we will resume where Latin 10 left off last semester, with Chapter Nine of Professor Johnston’s Traditio. I anticipate that each unit will follow the following pattern: 1) you will read the material on forms and grammar in advance; 2) in class we will go over this material and the Scribenda exercises, especially the Latin to English sentences; and 3) you will review and consolidate your understanding by writing out the English to Latin exercises, which I will correct and return to you. Hour-long in-class exams will occur after Unit 10, Unit 12, and Unit 15 (each 15% of the total course grade), in addition to the final exam at the conclusion of the course (20%). Homework will account for another 10%, class participation the remaining 25%. In the early part of the semester there will also be some ungraded quizzes, to accustom you to the format of the exams. Because I wish to allow the class to proceed at a pace which suits it, I am not publishing a day-by-day syllabus; you will be expected to know where in the text the class is and keep up, best achieved by diligent and frequent attendance. Besides the class time and my office hours (which count toward “class participation”), Brandeis offers a Latin tutor through BUGS (Emily Stott), and there is a workbook available with Traditio.

Students who feel anxious about learning a foreign language or who have particular issues or questions should talk to me as soon as they realize there may be a problem. Language acquisition is a lengthy and idiosyncratic process, and there are many different styles and exercises which can ease its difficulty.

If you are a student with a documented disability on record at Brandeis University and wish to have a reasonable accommodation made for you in this class, please see me immediately.
