Updatefor CSO WASH Fund | June 2014
Thejoint research project, “Enterprise in WASH”, is in the final stages of completing working papers for Indonesia, Vietnam and Timor Leste on our initial research onincentives shaping enterprise engagement in these countries, including factors influencing the way in which CSOs currently engage with private and social enterprise. In-country dissemination of results in Indonesia is taking place at a national event with NGOs, government and other agencies in Jakartaon 12 June 2014 in partnership with Plan Indonesia and UGM (our university partner). The Indonesia working paper is online ( and Vietnam and Timor-Leste working papers will be available by end June. A final Working Paper is currently being drafted, which synthesises results across the three countries.
Our first targeted studyexamines sanitation value chains in low density settings in Vietnam and Indonesia. In Vietnam, where data collection and analysis were undertaken in partnership with SNV,early findings indicate lower toilet coverage in areas of high poverty, and that these areas also experience the highest costs of sanitation products due to the impact of distance and transport costs. The findings raise questions for CSOs and policy makers on appropriate approaches to supporting supply-chains in remote rural areas, and also point to the need for innovation in product development towards light-weight, desirable models that are suited to such contexts. The analysisinvolved digital mapping and results will be presented at the WEDC Conference in Hanoi (September 2014). In-country data collection for this study in Indonesia is taking place in June 2014. Additional recent outputs include two presentations at the WASH 2014 Conference (see website to download these) and a journal paper in theJournal of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Development (in press) entitled “Private and social enterprise roles in WASH for the poor: A systematic review of current evidence”.
