October 27, 2014 376- 4311……ext. 1403 Respectful, Responsible, and Safe

I am so proud of the kids and their progress during the 1st 9 weeks of school. Everyone tells me that they have grown in maturity and it shows in their everyday activities. Their report card also shows the amount of effort and pride that they take in their work. Please remember to tell them how proud you are of them for using their RAIDER WAY in class. FYI…..return their “signed” report card envelope to school as soon as possible….:)

Reading and Math at a Glance

This week we return to our regular reading and spelling homework schedule.

Our reading focus is the comprehension skill of retelling a story and visualizing the events as we read/retell the story. Our grammar focus is adding an uppercase letter to change a noun into a proper noun...( the name of a person, place ,or thing.)

Our spelling words are the word families

–ug and –un.

Below are the vocabulary words and dictation sentence for this week.

make put play said want

Where do many fish go?

.

In math, our focus for the week will be using the frames and arrows lesson to count up and backwards, counting dimes and exchanging 10 pennies or 2 nickels for a dime, and reviewing telling time to the half-hour.

Nurse’s Notes

The changes in temperatures during fall can cause chapped lips, which can be distracting to your child during class time. So, it is OK to bring a chapstick with them to class. Since chapsticks are pretty cool items, please remind them that chapsticks should NOT be shared and that we do not eat them…even those some of them do smell pretty good…J

More on the back->->->

You now have another “limited” option for ordering books from Scholastic Books. Our Scholastic Book Fair opens Monday, Nov. 2 and ends on Nov. 7 during the Fall Festival. Richards receives a % of the total sales during the Book Fair to use in the library. Look for Special Book Fair flyers to come home soon. If you still wish to order from the flyer I sent home last week, orders should be returned by Oct. 31. If ordering online, please use our classroom code L6P9V.

Please continue collecting the Box tops for Education. We also are collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House at Riley Hospital.

Snack Time

Our lunch time is 10:50. Because this is so early in the day, we will have a snack time at 1:40. Your child may bring in a snack if you choose. Healthy snacks such as apples, carrots, grapes, peanut butter crackers, fruit cups, juice boxes, or cheese crackers are easy and quick choices.

I will provide a special snack for the kids this Friday so they do not need to bring a snack that day.

A REMINDER

1st graders do not participate in the Halloween parade on Friday. This year, we get to cheer on the kindergarteners.

Richards’ Annual Kindergarten Parade will start at 8:30 am Friday morning.

Weather Reminder

Question: How do you know you live in Indiana? Answer… a temperature change of 20 degrees in 24 hours…J This week we could see a dramatic change in our weather from the 80’s on Monday to a high of 51 on Friday .

We go outside for recess EVERY morning at 10:30a.m. (unless it is raining) and the temperature can still be a bit “chilly” at that time of the morning. Please remind your child to bring a jacket, sweatshirt, or coat to school every morning. You might even want to put gloves and a hat in their book bag….just in case.

REMINDER: Our newsletter and homework for the week are on our class website.

Click on the faculty link at the top of the Richards web page and look for my name to find our class website. I also added this week’s spelling words to the Spelling City link on that page: Week 12 Oct. 27, 2104.
