The agenda was approved as revised, including the addition of Library Science 101 updated outline and course change request.

4. Approval of Minutes (4/17/07)):

M/S/P to approve the Minutes of April 17, 2007 pending any necessary corrections. It was later noted that Sharon Maselli had been present, not absent.

5. Reports:

A. Academic Affairs—Dean Dan Walden for Vice President, Leige Henderson: Dan reported that enrollment of 160 MCHS students is anticipated for the summer in Library Science 101. They will be enrolled in a short term class from June 5 through 21. The hours of the course will be increased from 18 to 36, if approved. He stated that he and Glenn are jointly working on the Spring 2008 Accreditation Report, which includes progress being made on SLOs. Glenn stated that there will be a matrix of all previous recommendations, each with measurable objectives. There will also be a portion of the report that will concern the actions of the Curriculum Committee. (A list of the 7 recommendations was distributed.)

B. Academic Senate President—Reggie Morris, President: Reggie stated that the new composition of the Curriculum Committee was approved and that Alfred Reed Jr. had been elected as the new Academic Senate President.

C. Academic Senate, SLO Committee—Glenn Yoshida: Glenn stated that he had conducted SLO workshops in the CAOT lab with two more departments: Math, Engineering and Electronics and Natural Sciences, Health and PE. In the Fall he will provide workshops for the remaining departments of Business, English and Foreign Languages and the Library. The SLO committee is working on Institutional SLOs and will be development assessment tools for 2 or 3 of them. Course level SLOs will continue to be housed on the course outlines. Management of the assessment results is still to be determined.

D. Articulation—Articulation Officer, Linda Larson-Singer: Linda reported that results from the CSU system are still pending for the 8 courses that had been posted for LDTP (Lower Division Transfer Pattern) and that there still is reluctance throughout the state to submit additional courses. Updated agreements for various universities have been posted on ASSIST for 2007-2008.

E. District Curriculum Committee—Curriculum Chair, Linda Larson-Singer: A draft of the minutes of the April 27 meeting was distributed. Items include the “cloning” of Citizenship classes, which had been done already by the college; the possibility of courses being taught in a foreign language, requiring that the same course be taught in English; Phase III of the CRCC project done throughout the state of California; and varying opinions of the implication of a “C” in a prerequisite course.

G. Matriculation—Matriculation Coordinator, Rose Calderon: Rose reported that the District has purchased a Degree Audit System and ELAC and LASC will be the two pilot colleges in the District. A SARS program was also purchased that will include the function of automatic calling or emailing to students for various purposes, including early alert. She stated that the prerequisite validations need to be revisited. Dan stated that Research is inundated and will need extra funding to conduct research requiring the highest level of scrutiny. Reggie Morris reminded us all that we are asked to go above and beyond.

6. Old Business

A. By Consent:

-- Change in Course Numbers of CAOT 123 and 124 to 133 and 134 (Perret/Magee): There was consent to the change the course numbers from 123 to CAOT 133 and from 124 to CAOT 134, due to a mistake in numbers originally assigned by the District.

-- CAOT 134, Distance Education Addendum (Perret/Magee): After discussion, M/S/P to approve addendum pending corrections.

--LRNSKIL 7, Basic Composition (3-9-0-9) (no prerequisite) (Norris/Norwood/Maselli): Phyllis Norwood stated that this was a much needed composition class aimed at those who test below Developmental Communications. It is designed to diagnose individual strengths and weaknesses and will provide the opportunity for one-on-one instruction. The course deals only with composition. It may serve students across the board; they will be placed according to individual assessment results.

--CH DEV 172, Introduction to Careers in Child Development (1-1-1-0) (no prerequisite) (Brinson/Cliff) LaShawn Brinson stated that the course is designed to introduce students at any level to careers within the area of Child Development. The primary goal is to create a career plan and to make students aware of the requirements for the various Child Development permits and degree and transfer requirements. Students will be referred to counselors for educational plans. The course will be added as a Recommended Elective to the Child Development program.

M/S/P approve the new course (addition of existing District course)

M/S/P approve, pending corrections (numeration of hours within lab content), addition of revised content and addition of laboratory hours to existing current course outline

C.  Course Change Requests:

--PE 170, Walking for Fitness (1) (no prerequisite); change from 3 to 2 hours lab (Yoshida)

The 1 unit course is better served by requiring a 2-hour lab as opposed to a 3-hour lab. An updated course outline will follow.

M/S/P approve course change

--LIB SCI 101, Library Research Methods (1) (no prerequisite); change from 1 hour lecture to .5 lecture and .5 lab (Brady) (See LIB SCI 101, 7B above)

M/S/P approve course change

D. Course Archivals:

--ASTRON 1, Elementary Astronomy (3) (Yoshida)

M/S/P approval course archival (It will be removed from Plans A and B, CSU-GE and IGETC.)

E. Program Change Requests:

--GEOLOGY (Yoshida)

The current degree requires completion of 20 units, including those of Astronomy 1. With the archival of Astronomy (3), Geology 6, Physical Geology Laboratory (2) will become a Required Course. The total required units will be 19.

M/S/P approve program change (The change will be submitted to the District and State.)

F. Prerequisite Validations

--MATH 115, prerequisite validation for CHEM 51 (Sp 2001) (Yoshida/Saakian)

In the past Math 115 had been a prerequisite but was changed to an advisory in 1999. It will again be considered a prerequisite as students must know how to solve equations.

M/S/P MATH 115 as a prerequisite for CHEM 51, or placement higher than Math 115

The cross discipline prerequisite will require validation with a higher level of scrutiny within one year

G. Draft, Best Practices, Distance Education

A draft policy of Best Practices for Distance Education was distributed. It was prepared by Joe Perret, with some input following the first committee meeting on May 1, 2007. Sharon Maselli stated that she would like to be added to the committee as a representative of her department. The members are: Linda Brady, Ed Hector, Linda Larson-Singer, Pat Lewis, Sharon Maselli, Joe Perret, Alfred Reed Jr., Lernik Saakian, Leige Henderson, Dan Walden, LaVonne Hamilton and an unnamed AFT representative.) The policy was briefly discussed. Actual contact time can be measured on Moodle; there need to be on-campus Orientations and perhaps support meetings during the semester; students should be encouraged to use professional and/or appropriate email addresses. It was suggested that the committee meet during the summer as further discussion was required before action. The draft was tabled.

H. Draft, Policy, Cross Discipline Courses

A draft of guidelines was distributed regarding proposals of courses that involve two disciplines.

It was suggested that the chairs discuss the policy. The draft was tabled.
