DIF 2016
Languages wrap up
3 main languages were selected and on each one of them we worked with an external organisation for content co-creation and comms amplification. We worked with OuiShareFr who have coordinated FR and Spanish day and with CollaborAmerica for Portuguese day.
With an overall budget of £ 5,000
We have also gather a number of Open Mic that complemented the offer in a good way, provided diversity of content and attracted a large public at time (some more famous than others).
India: We desperately seek to work with students/teachers/business towards the creation of an India focus day, the result has been really disappointing, a few contact in the business sector showed little interest but the University communauty showed very little interest.
We tried via different angles and persons to raise interest but found no takers (Lena, Arpita, Karen worked on this).
French day
What went well.
- Started our first conversation in May/June
- Made an effort to create an event from scratch
- Created original content that hasen’t been explored before – informative/new/
- Invited high profile politics with entrepreneurs – very good mix of people to explore a new topic – which might have interested a large public;
- Lively and interactive session with the audience
=> Basically they’re good at content creation and hosting event
What could be improve
- The internet audience has been a bit let down in terms of interaction, and the position of the camera could be improve for a better online experience – set up the scene some time in advance and be aware of this is a co-produced event
Spanish day
What went well
- Very good content from OuiShare according to Karen
- Good diversity of OpenMic and Big Top tent
What could be improve
- The collection of pre-recorded videos didn’t permit interaction with online public
- Probably a good headliner would have been an interesting addition to attract some attention towards the Spanish day
Portuguese day
What went well
- Apparently the live event was great but we only got a bit of it and we are still awaiting for the recorded sessions for the catch-up period (it never arrived)
- The mix between public talk and one to one interview is a very good format, unfortunately it didn’t work
What could be improved
- Have the programme, summary, bio on time
- More feedback onComms? What about social media etc
Recommandations for 2017
-Pick up one headliner at least for each language toraise awarenessabout the DIF and attracta wider audience on the other sessionsof the language days
-Use pre-recorded video in countries where the Internet connexion is not reliable: live experience with Brazil is really risky - it simply did not work this year and it does not fit with an online event such as the DIF – although sessions worked in 2015.
-Our priority is to carry on with organisations that are able to create original content -> this can be built up during the year; and delivered pre-recorded
-Be more selective on the choice of Open Mic – it is important in language days as we only have one day to capture attention, we need to be spot on in terms of content!!
-I recommend a couple of interviews in Portuguese with high profile people but an online event is a bit too risky
Potential avenue for 2017/2/2 Focus on 1 language day Spanish for the number of global speaker.
Franchise the DIF with organisations that would be willing to use DIF branding around themes defined together with EMF steering commeettee/ with headliners and Open Mic – On Tedx example.
