NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2016

Welcome to our new home, Kingsfold Methodist Chapel Hall, Penwortham, when tonight for our first meeting we welcome local author Keith Johnson with his presentation of “ Chilling Tales of Old Preston. ” Keith has worked in the printing industry for 35 years. He is the author of various books particularly about Preston with the emphasis on local history, and including the nostalgia feature page for the Wednesday edition of the "Lancashire Evening Post."

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that one of our members, Barry Ashton, died earlier this month after a very short illness. His funeral is tomorrow. Barry brought to us the monthly local village/town magazines that kept us informed of what was happening around us and was always one of the first to arrive, putting out/replacing the chairs. Always cheerful and helpful.

Next month’s meeting, November 30th, St. Andrew’s Day, will be our annual “Jacob’s Join” which will be our usual light hearted - free and easy quiz - and refreshments. Hopefully you have put your contribution for the evening down on Pat’s ‘crib’ sheet so that we don’t all bring a pork pie and bag of crisps. Many thanks to you all for your contribution, it really is appreciated and adds greatly to the evening.

As suggested in the May Newsletter and following approaches by the Society and no doubt others of like-minded persuasion, L.C.C. Libraries have agreed that local and family history items deposited by individuals and various societies into libraries, will not be disposed of, but relocated at other libraries/archives. Relief that these unique and irreplaceable items will not be lost. Thanks to those who contacted their L.C.C. representatives. Fulwood, Lostock Hall and Bamber Bridge Libraries are now closed and cast into history. Lostock Hall will close on a yet unknown date in November. The local/family history items previously at Penwortham are now at Leyland.
