Lake Wilcox PS “Career Day” 2014

Thursday April 3, 2014

As our students begin thinking about secondary school and beyond, they start to realize there are many opportunities and options available to them. We believe that it is essential for students at an early age to begin learning about different types of career path opportunities so they may begin thinking about how they will plan for a successful future. As well, it is important students start deepening their understanding of themselves, their knowledge and skills, and what steps they need to take in order to become successful. We would love to have your assistance in helping our students have a rewarding Career Day. You are cordially invited to come and share your experiences with our students as a Career Day presenter.

On Thursday, April 3, 2014, Lake Wilcox Public School will be hosting our first Career Day for Grade 6, 7, and 8 students. This will be an exciting day as our students will have the opportunity to listen and interact with several presenters from various occupations. To enhance their experience, these students will be involved in lessons and activities in the weeks leading up to our Career Day and on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, we will be kicking off our Career Day with a Keynote Speaker from 8:30 to 9:30 am.

WE COULD USE YOUR HELP!

We are looking for presenters who represent the various “pathways” available for students to follow after secondary school (ex. those who have chosen to go to college, apprenticeships, directly out to the world of work or to university.) We would like the students to learn about the personal experiences that have led you to your career as well as the various requirements, aspects, and opportunities associated with that career.

Format:

Students will be placed in groups of approximately 24 students each and rotate through 6 various presentations which will be 45 minutes long. Therefore, you will be responsible for a minimum 45 minute presentation and question period. Due to the population and age group of our students, we are looking for speakers who are fluent in English and are comfortable presenting to adolescents. Based on feedback from previous events, our students have really enjoyed those workshops that included visuals, hands-on activities or demonstrations, and information that helped them gain a better understanding of the presenter, their career journey, and the aspects of their particular career.

If you or someone you know would be interested in participating in our Career Day, please fill out the back of this form and return intothe office by Thursday, December 19, 2013.

On behalf of our staff and students, thank you for considering being a part of our special day.

Sincerely,

The Career Day Planning Committee
