HILBERT COLLEGE

COURSE: FRENCH, LEVEL 5

ADVANCED HIGH SCHOOL FRENCH 103

TEACHER: STAN B. MOORE

September 2015

GOAL: The goals for Level 5 present an opportunity for the continued development of skill mastery in the areas of listening for understanding, speaking, reading and writing in French. A further goal is to understand and appreciate the cultures of other countries as well as their own. Students enrolled in this course have the option of receiving three ( 3 ) hours of college credit granted by an articulation agreement through Hilbert College.

CONTENT: The curriculum for French 5 is intended as the natural progression from work completed at Levels 1 through 4. The topics are repeated and spiraled to incorporate a series of evermore challenging goals, objectives and activities. Evaluation at this level is even more open-ended, allowing both teacher and student more flexibility. Students are guided in the application of critical thinking skills as these skills apply to the topics studied.

ACTIVITIES AND MATERIALS: A wide variety of teaching techniques is used in the course. These include the use of cooperative learning groups, mastery learning and projects in addition to the use of up-to-date videos, internet software, magazines, short stories and authentic materials.

HOMEWORK: All homework is either corrected in class, checked or graded. Homework is an integral part of the study program. Reduced credit will be given for late assignments. Failure to complete/fulfill requirements of an assignment within three ( 3 ) school days will result in the student receiving a grade of zero ( 0 ) for work not done.

GRADING AND TESTING: A daily performance grade is established in this class by way of a coupon based point system. Activities, tests and quizzes focus on the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. They are worth valuable credit according to the materials or skills tested. Oral participation is a must. It greatly enhances the daily performance grade. Comprehensive tests are modeled after Advanced Placement type questions and models. ( N.B. NO FINAL EXAM EXEMPTIONS AT THIS LEVEL OF STUDY UNLESS STUDENT OPTS NOT TO REGISTER FOR COLLEGE CREDIT AND IS ELIGIBLE. )

EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: In addition to bringing the required textbook to every class, students are expected to have a 2 inch three ring binder containing an ample supply of loose leaf paper and a pen. This binder will serve as a class notebook as well as handbook. Students will be responsible for maintaining their binder in an organized manner. The purchase of an Amsco French Dictionary is recommended. The interactive nature of the daily work requires that students be present to be successful in achieving the learning outcomes of Level 5. In case of absence, illness, field trips, music lessons, etc., students are obligated to speak to the teacher and follow directions in the student handbook. Yellow absentee cards must be completed before 7:45 am or after school during help class ONLY.
