Getting Started

Welcome to the MEDITECH Laboratory Module. Laboratories face pressure to perform tests and procedures accurately, report results quickly, and contain costs. MEDITECH’s Lab Module helps hospitals meet these challenges by allowing technologists to enter patient information, order tests, and report results efficiently.

What is a Tutorial?

A tutorial is a series of steps that guide you through the basic functions of a software module. This Quick Start introduces you to the important features of the Laboratory Module without overwhelming you with advanced procedures or elaborate explanations.

After completing this tutorial, you will be able to:

Enter patient orders

Cancel patient orders

Print specimen collection labels

Reprint collection lists

Receive specimens for worksheet eligibility

Enter test results

Inquire about test results

Signing onto the MEDITECH System

To work with the Laboratory Module, you must first sign onto it.

  1. Follow the instructions of your Implementation Specialist to Sign-on.

2. Segment: MD2

Directory: TRN5.5.MIS

Program: Z.sign.on

MIS Database: TRNLAB

3.Type LAB.QUICK at the USER prompt. Press <Enter>.

4. Type1234as your password at the Password prompt. Press <Enter>.

5. Select the LAB.QUICK Application Database.

6. The LIS (Laboratory Information System) Main Menu appears.

From the main menu you can reach every routine in the LIS modules.

Exiting from the System

When you want to end your session with the module, you must sign-off. You can press <Esc> until you return to the Main Menu.

To exit a Routine screen: Press F11 or ENTER If necessary, at Exit? Type Y. This returns you to the preceding menu.

To exit a Menu screen: Press F11 or ENTER until you reach the Main Menu.

To exit the Main Menu: Press F11 or ENTER or enter 0 (Sign Off) to SIGN-OFF.

When you see the Good Bye message, you may sign onto another module.

Exercise 1 – Entering a Requisition

The Enter / Edit Requisition routine allows you to:

Enter Patient Orders

Create specimens

Patient orders are typically entered in the Order Entry Module for inpatients and directly into the Lab Module for outpatients.

This exercise demonstrates how to enter patient orders.

Begin at the LIS Main Menu.

Select LABORATORY.

The Laboratory Menu appears.

Select REQUISITIONS.

The LIS Requisition menu appears.

Select Enter/Edit under REQUISITION.

The Enter/Edit Requisition screen displays.

Answer the screen prompts with the responses listed below:

PATIENT / Select a patient using a partial name lookup
with the <LASTNAME,FIRSTNAME>
convention using the <F9> key. Press
<ENTER>.
A patient lookup appears. Type the lookup number beside your patient and press <ENTER>, or click on the appropriate patient.
Note: If you selected an old outpatient account, you will receive the message “This patient was registered T-x. Continue?” Select Yes.
REQ # / Press <ENTER>. You are creating a new requisition , so the Lab Module assigns a new number and NEW appears in the response field.
COLL DATE / The default response is T for today. Press
<ENTER> to accept it.
COLL TIME / Type N for Now. Press <ENTER>.
PRIORITY / To accept the default response of R for
routine, Press <ENTER>.
RECEIVED? / The default response is N for no. Press
<ENTER> to accept it.
COLL CAT / The default for Collection Category is
POOL. Press <ENTER> to accept it.
WKLD FUNC / Skipped
LABEL DEV / Press <ENTER>.
WORKCARD DEVICE / Skipped
COMMENTS? / To accept the default of No, press
<ENTER>. Later you will learn how to
enter comments here.
MARKERS / Press <ENTER>
CALL? / Press <ENTER>.
AUTOFAX? / Press <ENTER>.
ORDER / Type GLU for glucose. Press <ENTER>
twice.
EDIT PX / Press <ENTER>.
FILE / Press <ENTER> to accept the Y.

Requisition and Lab specimen numbers appear on the screen like this:

Write down these numbers on the lines provided here. You will need these numbers in

the following exercises.

Press <ENTER> or<Exit> until you return to the Laboratory Main Menu.

Now, go back to Exercise 1 and enter another requisition on the same patient.

Press <SPACEBAR> <ENTER> to recall the last patient. Follow the same directions this time, but type BUN instead of GLU at the ORDER prompt. Be sure to write down the requisition number and specimen number of the tests on the lines below.

Exercise 2 – Canceling a Lab Specimen

The Cancel Lab routine allows you to:

Cancel erroneous or duplicate orders

Remove unnecessary specimens from the work pool

Credit the patient

Keep a record of the order for tracking purposes

Select REQUISITIONS.

The LIS Requisition menu appears.

Select LIS SPECIMEN MENU.

The LIS Specimen menu appears.

Select the CANCEL LAB routine.

The Cancel Lab Specimen screen displays.

Screen Prompt / Your Response
SPEC# / Type the BUN specimen number you recorded in the first exercise by entering C# (# - specimen number). This is the specimen you will cancel. Press <ENTER>.
CANCELLATION COMMENTS / Type a reason for cancellation. This is a required comment. Press <F12 to save this comment.
CANCEL? / Type Y and press <ENTER>. A message stating that the specimen is cancelled appears on the screen.
Press <ENTER>.
BROADCAST REQ? / Select N, Press <ENTER>.

Hit <ENTER> until you return to the Laboratory Main Menu.

Exercise 3 - Creating a Collection Batch

The Create Collection Batch Routine allows you to:

Generate labels for the collection category according to collection time.

Collection categories are defined by the laboratory.

Important: Your class may only create one collection list. At this point, consult your trainer for further instructions.

Select SPECIMEN COLLECTION.

The Specimen Collection menu appears.

Find the PREVIEW and CREATE heading.

Select the CREATE Routine.

The Collection Batch Create screen displays.

Exercise 4 - Reprinting a Collection List

The Reprint Collection List Routine allows you to:

The Specimen Collection menu appears.

Find the LABELS heading.

Select the REPRINT COLLECTION LABELS Routine.

The Reprint Collection Labels screen appears.

Exercise 5 – Receiving a Specimen

The Receive by Specimen Routine allows you to:

Make collected specimens eligible for worksheets and result entry

Select SPECIMEN COLLECTION.

The LIS Specimen Collection menu appears.

Find the RECEIVE heading.

Select the BY SPECIMEN Routine.

The Receive by Specimen screen displays.

Screen Prompt / Your Response
FAST INPUT / Type N for No. Press <ENTER>.
E/E COM? / Press <ENTER>.
CHARGE / Press <ENTER>.
WKLD FUNC / Press <ENTER>.
E/E SETUP / Press <ENTER> to accept default of N
SPECIMEN / To recall the last patient and all their requisitions, press <SPACEBAR> then press <ENTER>. A Specimen Lookup appears. Type the lookup number of the glucose.
COLL TIME / Enter a time that is before the received time. Press <ENTER>.
COLL BY / Type your name. Press <ENTER>. Hit <ENTER> to accept “Yes” at the Not Found. New? Prompt.
RECV DATE/TIME / To accept the recorded information, press <ENTER>.
RECV BY / Press <ENTER>.
FUNC / Press <ENTER> until the “RECEIVE?” pop up box appears.
RECEIVE? / Type Y for yes. A message appears:
Receiving process has been started <RETURN>.

Press <ENTER> to return to the Laboratory Main Menu.

Exercise 6 - Entering Results

The Result Entry Routine allows you to:

Enter laboratory results into the LIS.

Select RESULT ENTRY.

The Lab Results menu appears.

Select the ENTER RESULTS (STANDARD) Routine

The Enter/Edit Lab Results screen displays.

Screen Prompt / Your Response
SPEC / Type a period ( . ) Press <ENTER> to recall the previous specimen.
RESULT / Type 110. Press <ENTER>.
SELECTION / Type A to File and Verify results. Press
<ENTER>.
SPECIMEN / Press <ENTER> to return to the Lab Main Menu.

Exercise 7 – Result Inquiry

The Result Inquiry Routine allows you to:

View a comprehensive report detailing information pertaining to a specimen.

Select RESULTS INQUIRY.

The Result Inquiry Menu appears.

Select PRINT SPECIMENS (INTERNAL).

The Print Specimens (Internal) screen displays.

SPEC / Type a period ( . ) Press <ENTER> to recall the previous specimen.
SPECIMEN / Press <ENTER>.
SHORT FORM? / Press <ENTER> to accept N for No.
PRINT ON: / Press <ENTER> to accept S to print the report to your screen. The Lab Internal Inquiry Report appears. View the report for its contents. Press F11.

SPECIMEN / Press <ENTER> to return to the Laboratory Main Menu.
