A. Mady Womack, Student Body President
a. Start off with a moment of silence for the victims in the events of Lawrence & Las Vegas. CAPS is a resource here on campus for students. We spoke to Provost Neeli about travel fund for graduate students and am hoping to get that resolved. Moving forward with a policy for notification for things like shell casings. We are looking for a director and managing director for Jayhawks first.
B. Mattie Carter, Student Body Vice President
a. You’re going to be hearing about the formal announcement because currently LGBTQIA+ students are having troubles getting on saferide and because their ID doesn’t match their appearance they have been denied rides on SafeRide. Student senate will be funding IDs for these students and feel free to reach out to any of the staff with questions. Feel free to ask questions about decisions for the administrators that come before the meetings and make sure to keep on asking questions.
C. Charles Jetty, Chief of Staff
a. Happy to welcome some more new senators. We’ve had a remarkable amount of senators, just waiting on a pharmacy senator. I also wanted to acknowledge that we had a few new appointed senators. We’ll have a doodle poll for legislative training times that work. Make sure to be doing office hours. I’ve been going to student orgs to recruit for elections commissions. Additionally, some of you may know we had some legislation on elections reform, so please contact me if you’d like to collaborate on that. We’ve been looking at court of appeals and if you are looking to work on that feel free to contact me.
b. Senator – JR/SR CLAS – Hannah burdick – junior, psychology major, interested in bettering the KU community
c. Armita Seisan was here as a senator two semesters ago and am excited to be back
D. Caleb Schafer, Graduate Affairs Director
a. First GSAT meeting, talked about issues that faced graduate students, the big thing that we faced this week are setting perameters for graduate printing that passed last week. I will be around afterwards to talk to graduate students. I’m working on having a meeting to expand graduate services for graduate students and am looking to support graduate students in that way.
E. Jack Stevens, Director of Policy and Development
a. Touch on two platforms we’re currently working on. Summer Venture in business, program for high school students from underrepresented backgrounds and am working to make sure that this is going to continue. We’re analyzing some of the feedback we’ve recevied and are starting to work on Summer 2018. Two weeks ago at SGA conference one thing that we are going to work on is food securities and partnering with CCO. K-State representative will be coming tomorrow and look forward to things with campus food pantry.
b. Trisha – Are you working on food and security in the dining hall?
c. Jack – Ike Uri put out a report last year and focused on how students don’t even know how they’re getting food tomorrow.
d. Rusha – A study that was done by CCO was a campus climate survey and found that at least 50% of students at KU are experiencing food issues in some way and they found that the majority of these students without dining plans and with working with KU dining can subsidize dining to make sure that needs are met.
e. Joe – What other universities in Big 12 are doing this?
f. Jack – KSU reps coming tomorrow, they have lots of valuable information, like structure. Wichita St.
g. Jasmine – Hi this is jasmine, senator from able hawkes and allies – my question is related to accessability for that. When do you plan to have the supplemental braille information on that? Meaning when something goes to the food pantry will they have braille labels on information like that, or will they have some type of label because I wouldn’t be able to access an area like that if it did not have labels.
h. Jack – that is very important and I will put it to the forefront of our plans while developing this program
F. Libby Stauffer, Communications Director
a. We sent out org assignments, should’ve contacted but I’ll give you a few more days and will remind you, so please finish up with that.
b. Jasmine - – Hi this is jasmine, senator from able hawkes and allies. My question is related to ID problems, what about domestic violence victims and survivors. Sometimes we need to be able to replace our ID’s aswell. I’m in that situation right now. My card was taken from me and I don’t have access to it.
c. Rusha – This is more focused towards LGBTQIA+ students who have changed their gender identities or expression.
d. Mady – Merrill Evans is in charge of that because we have a survivor fund at Watkins
G. Noah Ries, Internal Affairs Director
a. Clicker vote tells attendance, we are going to contact you if you have more than 3 unexcused absences. Just a reminder of that. Antonio is taking the minutes because I got a concussion. I’d like to invite all of the freshman interns to come up. Thank you to all of the interns. Thanks you can all sit down now. One last thing, we did experience a few technical difficulties, so just bear with us.
b. Joe – How did you find so many people?

a. Been working with this student group since this summer, previous president had not completed funding, but they have done a very good job of working with us. They’re coming up right now. They’ve gone through Pepsi funding.
b. Rohan – we have a main event coming up every year and we celebrate this every year and it’s happening on 5th of November at 5:30 in the evening and basically a bunch of Indian performances and standup comedy, address by a KU professor. It’s a big festival in India and a big event on campus and a lot of people look forward to it. We’re almost good to go, just need to be able to fund rent. We get an discount for this event.
c. Brendan – have you looked into any other venues?
d. Rohan – a lot of years ago, this event used to happen at Woodruff auditorium, last year we had more people come and it was able to accommodate more people. They have a good technical crew that takes care of everything and need a bigger space for dancing performances.
e. Daniel L – Motion to call to question
Bill passes 76-3
B. 2018-043: A BILL TO AMEND STUDENT SENATE RULES & REGULATIONS ARTICLE I SECTION 4
a. Martin D – This bill tries to accomplish a revision of rights and responsibilities, when I looked into SSRR, there wasn’t very much and with suggestions from Mattie Carter, Lance Watson we came up with a sceme to give some clarity and structure within SSRR. We’ll start off with membership criteria. This is open to any KU Student that adheres to atttendence policy laid out below. Modeled after standing committees. Anyone who shows up has speaking rights, need to be at one meeting to have voting rights. It is up to the discretion of the chair for extenuating circumstances as far as absences for voting rights. Go to committees, senate and full senate does not have power to amend. I’ll open it up for questions
b. Zoya – attendance apply to folks who are electing on standing committes, MSG and general body?
c. Jasmine - – Hi this is jasmine, senator from able hawkes and allies, can you summarize the part about, I cant remember the name, abut Marginalized communities, you said something about that can you summarize that part again
d. Complains about marginalized students not being represented, MSG and UA add some balance and whoever wants to join the committee can
e. Jasmine – can I have a comment? So, I’m on student rights committee, I know that on that commity you’ve made that comment before. So im hoping that that goes through.
f. Martin – I will be vigilent about that
g. Brendan – will there be official record keeping? Minutes taken?
h. Martin – that’ll be you. I originally had that in there and there were some amendments.
i. Mattie – Positive speech, background about this, so you understand why this is needed, two years ago the administration wanted a new code, subcommittee meetings didn’t go well because people wouldn’t go to the same meetings and spent an hour re-explaining the situation. No consistency and people showing up, voicing their concerns and there wasn’t a balance. We wanted to have somebody guaranteed to have numbers and it’s not just random people. We want consistency and not just someone to come to the first meeting and the last meeting. People packing the room was a big issue. This is very important because if you were to ever get in trouble with university, university has jurisdiction and doesn’t. it was not a diverse body looking over this. I urge you to pass this bill to guarantee that specific people from different areas.
j. Joseph – when will this committee be held?
k. Martin – next cycle, will try to work out a schedule that works. Bi-weekly somewhere around that kind of time frame.
l. Daniel – motion to call to question
m. Bill passes 76-0
