CHEERLEADER/MASCOT GUIDELINES

  1. In order for a student to participate as a cheerleader/mascot, the student must meet U.I.L. requirements for eligibility. All cheerleaders/mascots must follow these guidelines and any other school requirements.

II.There are 10 girl cheerleaders, up to 4 boy cheerleaders, and 1 mascot on each squad. The squads are determined by judges from a qualified organization (e.i. NCA, UCA, etc.). Candidates with the highest total scores will fill the 10 positions for each squad.

  1. Grade Requirements
  2. Each cheerleader/mascot must meet the “No pass/No play” requirements in order to participate.
  3. All grade averages will be checked following the close of each six weeks.
  4. Ineligible cheerleaders/mascots may regain eligibility in three weeks if they are passing all of their scheduled classes on the next progress report. If so, he or she may participate beginning at the close of the school day at the end of the fourth week of the six weeks.
  5. A cheerleader/mascot who is ineligible to perform due to grades must still attend all practices and performances.
  1. Attendance Requirements
  2. Cheerleaders/mascots should be aware that when they are absent for any reason, it puts a strain on the remaining squad members. The formations, builds, and safety of the squad depend on everyone being present.

Excessive absences are unacceptable.

  1. A cheerleader/mascotcan be removed for three unexcused absences or tardies from games, practices, or any scheduled event (parade, pep rally, assembly, etc.)
  2. Absence from any cheerleader/mascot activity is unexcused except for the circumstances listed below:
  3. Personal illness or accident
  4. Death in the family
  5. Prearranged activities with a notice to sponsor at least two days prior to the activity. Sponsor must approve.

  7. Doctor appointments should be scheduled around practice and performances.
  8. School tutoring will not be accepted as an excused absence (Arrange your tutoring on a day when cheerleader/mascot practice is not scheduled). This is subject to the sponsor’s approval as needs arise due to testing.
  1. Attitude Requirements
  2. A cheerleader/mascot is expected to exhibit a positive attitude at all times.
  3. A cheerleader/mascot should never take part in or encourage complaining, griping, or “bad mouthing” the squad, the school, or the sponsors.
  1. Conduct Requirements
  2. It is expected that a cheerleader/mascot’s conduct be satisfactory. The sponsors will give evaluations during the six weeks for teachers to list classroom conduct.
  3. Any cheerleader/mascot who receives a “U” in conduct will be subject to conference with the sponsor and appropriate discipline may be assigned.
  4. Cheerleaders/mascots must abide by the rules and regulations as stipulated in the La Grange Student Handbook.
  5. If a cheerleader/mascot is assigned to ISS, the cheerleader/mascot will not be allowed to perform with the squad for one week.
  6. If a cheerleader/mascot has more than ONE ISS assignment in one year, he or she will not be allowed to tryout the following year.
  7. A member will be subjected to a conference with the sponsor and principal to discuss disciplinary measures to be taken if found guilty of any of the following: smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages, drug abuse, use of profanity, defacing property, fighting, M.I.P., or any other violations of civil or criminal law.

VII.Conflicts with the Law---Outside of School

  1. Misdemeanors
  2. 1st Offense----Self disclosure---Suspended for 2 weeks
  3. 2nd Offense—Self disclosure---Suspended for 4 weeks
  4. 1st Offense—-Non-disclosure—Suspended for 6 weeks
  5. 2nd Offense—Non-disclosure—Suspended for 12 weeks
  6. 3rd Offense—Removal from squad
  1. Felony
  2. 1st Offense--Suspended for 9 weeks
  3. 2nd Offense—Removal from squad
  1. Cheerleaders/mascots are expected to be aware of and follow all transportation guidelines as set forth in the student handbook.
  2. No cheerleader/mascot with a visible hickey will be allowed to perform. Any cheerleader/mascot benched for this reason will receive an unexcused absence.
  1. A cheerleader/mascot is NOT to chew gum while practicing or performing.
  1. A cheerleader/mascot is NOT to wear any jewelry while practicing or performing.
  1. The sponsors, in accordance with school policy, will handle the selection of purchases of equipment and uniforms.
  1. Uniforms may not be used, changed, or altered in any way without prior permission from the sponsor. No uniform or part of the uniform may be used by any other individual or organization without prior permission of the sponsor. Any apparel worn to resemble a team uniform is to be approved by the sponsor.
  1. Uniforms will be worn AT SCHOOL EVENTS ONLY. As soon as you leave any event, you will change before going elsewhere. Middle School Cheerleaders/Mascots may not wear their uniforms to high school events.
  2. When in uniform and representing La Grange ISD, cheerleaders/mascots will display conduct reflecting school guidelines, sponsor(s) and administration guidance, and good common sense.

  1. Cheerleaders/mascots will participate in uniform at all home football games. Seventh grade cheerleaders/mascot will cheer for seventh grade games, and eighth grade cheerleaders/mascot will cheer for eighth grade games. If you are in uniform and your squad is not performing, you must sit on the field with the sponsor. Cheerleaders/mascots are encouraged to attend other out-of-town games, but they may not be in uniform nor may they lead cheers unless otherwise arranged by the sponsor.
  1. The approximate cost for uniforms and supplies will be:
  2. Shoes---$75.00
  3. Briefs---$35.00
  4. Long sleeve undershirt---$40.00
  5. Leggings---$40.00
  6. Shirt---$30.00
  7. Hoodie---$40.00
  8. These items must be paid in full prior to summer camp. A cheerleader/mascot will not perform until their portion of the uniform has been paid.
  9. The school will provide the following items for each cheerleader/mascot. (These items will remain the property of La Grange Middle School, and any lost or stolen items must be paid for.) Approximate costs are listed: Uniform--$150.00, Megaphone--$45.00, Pom Poms--$30.00
  10. It is the cheerleader’s job to wash the uniform after each game. Uniforms must be washed and hung on a hanger before being returned at the end of the year. Mascot uniform will be periodically dry cleaned by the sponsor.
  1. Cheerleaders/mascots are required to attend practices according to the schedule provided by sponsor. The complete squad will attend each practice. The students and parents must work out transportation problems. There will be no practices on the LMS campus without the consent and presence of a sponsor.
  1. Cheerleaders/mascots must realize that cheerleading is a full year responsibility. Cheerleading/macot is a long and time-consuming obligation that must be met by the student with a positive, eager, and spirit-boosting attitude.
  1. 8TH Grade Cheerleaders/mascot have the responsibility to fulfill until the end of their 8th Grade year. This includes all tryout practices and new squad practices as well.
