Dear Students and Parents, August 1st, 2017
¡Hola y bienvenidos! I would like to welcome you back to LHS and to the start of what I wish to be an enjoyable, engaging, and productive school year. I hope you had a fantastic summer break and are refreshed and excited to start anew this year.
My name is Chris Carey, and I am honored and enthused to serve as your Spanish teacher this upcoming academic year. I am from Brentwood, having grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area my whole life, and did my undergraduate studies as a Spanish & Broadcast Journalism major at San Francisco State University. In addition, I also lived and studied abroad at the Pontifica Universidad Catolica in Santiago, Chile between 2007-2008, where I received a minor in Contemporary Latin American Studies. I am currently in my last semester in the TESL (ESL) Certificate program At UC Berkeley Extension.
My time living in Latin America was simply remarkable, and I feel that the academic, cultural, and spiritual experiences I gained serve as the core foundation for my passion for and perspective toward learning and teaching foreign languages. With such a direction, I decided to study abroad at the University of Seoul during my last semester, and elected to stay for three years while teaching Spanish & ESL at the International School in Kwangju.
If there’s one trait or characteristic that is definitive of my personality, it would be passion, and that passion is exemplified in my teaching style and interaction with my students. I strive to engage and encourage students to be creative and think abstractly, to not conform to the majority opinion, but rather embrace various points of view and creative approaches to our coursework, and how it relates to the world around us.
Overall, expect a class that will challenge you; a class that hopefully you’ll look forward to attending, and a learning experience that you will carry with you well after you graduate. Parents, you can rest assured that I will do everything in my power to ensure such a learning environment for your child. If you or your child have any questions or concerns regarding our course, or any other matter of interest, at any point in time throughout the year, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me either in-person or via e-mail.
If you are interested in helping contribute to our classroom supplies, we will gratefully accept any of the following items for classroom use, such as:
è Pens / White-board (dry-erase) markers / Printer paper / Notecards / Tissues /
¡Muchas gracias y bienvenidos de nuevo!
Mr. Chris Carey
