Kowloon Jade (formerly Nobito) is being offered for sale. After eight years of ownership, I can no longer devote the time and attention of which she is worthy. Below are the basic specifications of the boat, a summary of her history, as well as a detailed equipment list. This is a full-keeled, heavily-built sloop-rigged auxiliary motor sailer, custom-designed by J. Laurent Giles and constructed by the world-reknowned Cheoy Lee Shipyard in Hong Kong, in 1953. LOA 32 feet, LWL 29 feet, 9’6” beam, 4 foot draft, weight approximately 9 tons.

Built to Lloyds specifications under the original owner’s supervision, Kowloon Jade has served as pilot vessel in Hong Kong, survey vessel in Malaysian rivers, private yacht for research expeditions. A veteran of the South China Sea, the Great Lakes, East Coast of the U.S. and the Caribbean, she has ranged the B.C.Coastfor more than 40 years from Vancouver to the Queen Charlottes.

HULL:

One and one quarter inch-thick teak carvel planking, matched on both sides. Ipol frames 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” on 9 inch centers. Bronze bolted and copper riveted. Robust construction, hull is caulked with polysulphide and finished with Cetol. Underbody has full keel with outboard chengia rudder 3” thick, tapered to 1 ½”, specifically designed to bounce over sandbars. Displacement/length ratio 420. Keel is balau with 2590 pound lead casting, bronze bolted.Hull speed of 7.4 knots is easily reached. This boat steers well in reverse and docks easily.

ACCOMMODATIONS:

Minimum headroom in main salon 6 foot 2 inches. Main settee berths port and starboard 6 foot 6 inch length. V-berths in forecastle. Main cabin has galley to starboard, stove to port. A short ladder accesses pilothouse, abaft the ladder is the engine room with head , electrical bay, and quarterberth. Large engine room with 4 foot headroom, easy access to the power plant, massive storage space, with shelving and 4 large drawers for spare parts.

Interior of the boat is mostly teak with silver myrtle wood bulkheads and engine enclosure. The galley has 2 s/s sinks with hand pump for fresh water and foot pump for sea water. Cupboards under galley counter and shelves above. Gimbaled 2 burner Force 10 propane stove with oven, new in 2003. Separate custom made s/s wood-burning stove enclosed by s/s/ guards. The small pilothouse has inside steering and inside electronics. Seven portlights with beveled glass, three opening hatches. One opening portlight over stove with exhaust fan.

ENGINE:

Gardner 2LW 24 horsepower diesel, 2 cylinder, weight 1800 lbs. Top RPM 1200, idles at 300. Easy on fuel, appx. one half gallon per hour at 6 knots. Generally regarded as most reliable marine engine in the world. Stripped down in 1985 for inspection; replaced all gaskets and nuts and bolts to SAE sizes. Spare injectors, full gasket set, never used. All systems color-coded. Shaft is 1 ½” monel. Sailing prop is 18x10 3 blade L.H. Towing prop stowed. Electric or hand crank. Wet exhaust system, overboard discharge starboard side. S/S fuel tank, 30 gallons U.S. Copper fuel lines. Six inch cowl ventilator and 6” turbine vent with inside dorades and small pancake- type cooling fans for tropical cruising.

RIG:

All new in 1983-84 re-rigged to Marconi sloop. Ash mast was most advanced wood mast built in North America at the time. Totally hollow, fully-ventilating, 4 internal halyards Plastic roller bearing sheaves. Taper and fittings designed by Herreschoff. 9/32” wire standing rigging is 316, not 304. Internal chain plates Type 316 s/s. ½” Hasselfors turnbuckles, Lloyds approved. Swaging is industrial/aircraft type, not conventional boat swaging. Spare rigging wire, fittings and halyards on board.

SAILS:

New in 83-84. Made by Storch of Vancouver. Mainsail 270 sq. ft. 3 rows of reef points. 4 battens. Jib 130 sq ft. Genoa, fan cut, 200 sq ft. new in 2001. Storm jib on board. Ripstop nylon spinnaker 560 sq. ft.. All in good shape. Always kept covered.
