Key Questions

What helps you to remember which numbers add to 5, 10 etc?

How many ways can you make 6, 7, 9 etc?

Does it make a difference which number you start with?

Practical Activities

Use of the whiteboard/100 square/number lines/purse and money to practice the above.

Use of dominoes: adding the two sides of a domino. What is the smallest total? What is the biggest total? This can be made into a game, with the pupils keeping a running total of their scores – the winner has the highest total.

Hoops containing a selection of numbers from 1 to 10. Total on a domino is calculated & the domino is put into the hoop that contains the answer. This could then be linked to data handling by considering possible totals on dominoes & dice.

Playing cards can also be used – pupils take it in turns to turn over and add the totals of two cards. Again, this can be made into a game. This can be used for addition or subtraction.

Rolling/adding the totals of 2 or 3 dice together.

Using 100 squares/number lines to assist with addition/subtraction.

Role play which includes addition/subtraction with money.

Role play – addition/subtraction in the shop/supermarket etc. Shopping lists can be devised and bills can be calculated (simple addition/subtraction).

Addition/subtraction/counting in the school grounds.

Hopscotch : throw 2/3 bean bags & add or subtract etc. in order to go.

Using multilink of various colours to make & record number bonds.

Written Activities

Worksheets to link with Dominoes/Dice/Card Games as above.

Worksheets to practice addition/subtraction to at least 10. Extend to over 10 if appropriate.

Worksheets with pictures to assist pupils who find this concept difficult. The pupils can then count the objects to add/take away.

Word problems.

Worksheets where the pupil has to complete spider diagrams.

Worksheets to link with Role Play.

Remember, addition with 3 numbers should also be covered.
