Job Description

Teaching:

The teacher will be expected to teach up to 15periods (approx) per week. This position is dependent on the ongoing enrolment of ORS funded students.

The terms and conditions of employment are those defined in the Secondary Teachers’ Collective Agreement.

Appraisal

Teachers will be appraised against the job description and also against the general requirements and professional standards for classroom teachers as detailed in the Secondary Teachers’ Collective Employment Contract.

Overall task

Teach effectively and manage the effective delivery of curriculum to students. Under the direction of the department heads (HOD’s) complete required tasks related to curriculum delivery, student management, resource management, resource development and other tasks as may arise from time to time and fulfil the schools’ expectations of being a form teacher.

Specific Tasks

  1. Be responsible, under the direction of the Heads of Department, for the planning and delivery of instruction, the development and maintenance of the curriculum, development and implementation of assessment tasks, reporting and other duties as may be required for the smooth running of the faculty and the subjects taught.
  2. Contribute as required to the school’s pastoral care structure, academic counselling framework, communication/consultation processes within the school and wider community.
  3. Further the goals and objectives of the school as outlined in its’ strategic plan.
  4. Completion of requirements for teachers in such matters as:attendance, active supervision (duty), health and safety, compliance and other matters/administrative tasks as may arise from time to time.
  5. Contribute to the wider life of the school.
  6. Meet the criteria for quality teaching as specified in the Secondary Teachers’ Collective Employment Contract and Education Council of NZ.
  7. Other tasks as agreed upon by negotiation with the Principal.
  8. Empathy and understanding of working with students with an intellectual disability
  9. Strengths in managing complex and challenging behaviours effectively
  10. Sound curriculum knowledge,
  11. Empathy and understanding of working with teenagers with an intellectual disability
  12. Understanding of teaching and learning processes, classroom management, planning and assessment including co-ordinating and writing of IEP’s
  13. Ability to motivate and engage students
  14. Ability to lead a team of teacher aides effectively and contribute as a member of the school team
  15. Self-motivation and creativity
  16. Excellent communication and reporting skills
  17. Physical fitness to carry out the demands of the role.

CRITERIA FOR APPOINTMENT

In considering applications for positions the Principal, in consultation with an appointment panel shall appoint the person who in their view is best suited to the position. The successful applicant will need to demonstrate a genuine passion for working with young people and:

1. Be a competent, trained teacher holding current Education Council of Aoteoroa registration.

2. Possess a relevant tertiary qualification.

3. Have acommitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and to meeting the needs of Mãori students

4. Have an in-depth current knowledge of the New Zealand Curriculum including current trends in pedagogy, curriculum content, and assessment.

4. Have an ability to teach the required subjects up to the levels specified

5. Have a commitment to co-curricular activities offered at Papanui High school.

6. Have a clear understanding of, and empathy with, the character and culture of Papanui High school.

7. Demonstrate evidence of a collegial approach to teaching.

8. Possess well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.

9. Demonstrate evidence of on-going professional and curriculum development

10. Demonstrate evidence of excellent and creative pedagogical practice in classroom teaching.

11. Be well organised and able to meet deadlines.
