Unit I: Theories in Anthropological Research & Methodology

History of Field Work Tradition and Emergence of Anthropology as an Empirical discipline, Dimensions of Anthropological field work in India: Simple and Complex societies.

Unit 11:Research Design

Concept, Features and Types of Research Design - Exploratory, Descriptive, Experimental and Evaluative studies; Methods of formation of Objectives and Hypothesis. Sampling and Methods of Comparison

Unit m :Methods of Data Collection

Methods and procedure of data collection: Primary and Secondary source of data, Participatory Techniques: PRA & RRA, Participatory mapping: Sociometry, Observation, Focused group discussion, Tabulation and methods of analysis.

Unit IV : Computing and Analysis of Research Data

Problems and issues in Executing Research in Field Situations: Ethical issues Procedures of Data analysis and Presentation of Field Report: Print form, Electronic media & Visual media

Emergence of Ethnographic and Tribal Studies in Anthropology, Concept of Tribe: Demographic, Racial and Linguistic Distributions, Cultural differentiations and Ethnic Identity

Unit II:Tribal Policies and Tribal Administration in India

Constitutional Safeguards: Protective Legislation, History of Tribal Development and Administration: Pre Independent and Post Independent India. Tribal policies and programmes since from Tribal Sub-plan approach and respective five year plan periods

UnitIII: Tribal Problem & Tribal Movement in India

Crisis of Tribal Identity: Ethnic Conflict, Ethos & Values, Identity and language, Gender issues and Globalization. Problems of Involuntary Displacement; Migration; Rehabilitation & Re-settlement policies in India & Odisha

Methods and consequences of land alienation and Indebtedness; forest Policies, Impact of Industrialization & Urbanization on Tribes.

Unit IV: Tribal Odisha

Socio-economic profile and Cultural diversities of Tribal Odisha; Polices, Plans and Programmes for Tribal Administration in Odisha.

The students have to undergo field work preferably in Tribal / Rural community and submit Dissertation to the HoD, Anthropology, at least one month before completion of course work. Topics need to be approved by the HoD of the Department and the candidate has to remain under the supervision of the staff of the Department and submit their dissertations with final approval of the HoD. The Dissertation shall be examined by an Internal Examiner as well as an External Examiner followed by a Power Point presentation & Viva-Voice examination.
