December 7, 2014

Meeting was called to order by Randy Paul at 12:06.

Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence and the mission statement.

Officers present- Kolman Fuzy, Randy Paul, Tony Losego, Brian Nissley, Kim Chafin, J.R. Gantner, Robin Pickins (MRF) and Kathy Gantner.

Welcome by Kolman Fuzy who conducted meeting in Harley Stocks absence.

New members or Guest – none present.

Officers Reports

Legislative – J.R. Gantner

·  NHTSA – President Obama announced that Mark Rosekind as his nomination for NHTSA Administrator. Rosekind is a sleep scientist by training, currently on the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and was the president Alertness Solutions for 13 years. He is a leading expert in human fatigue. He will be called on to hold automakers accountable and raise the bar on safety. Mr. Rosekind now faces Senate confirmation.

·  MRF – Released a new video to help riders perform pre-ride safety inspection check. T-CLOCS is critical to MRF’s goals of keeping motorcyclist safe and educated.

T-CLOCS = T – tire and wheels C – controls L – lights and electrical O – oil and other fluids C – chassis S- stands

·  Ohio is rolling back pedestrians right-of-way within crosswalks when they have a walk signal. New laws require pedestrians to yield the right-of-way to vehicles lawfully within the intersection at the time that the walking person signal indication is first shown. Patricia Kovacs – Columbus area cycling advocate is asking the Ohio General Assembly and ODOT to change the law back to its previous wording. Last year 115 pedestrians were killed on Ohio roadways.

·  Colorado Abate is experiencing difficulties and tough times. They are asking for donations to assist them. www.abateofcolo.org

·  Definitions – from Ohio Law ( interesting read)

Ø  Speed Limit – No person shall operate a vehicle at a speed greater or lesser than is reasonable, having due regard to the traffic, surface, and width of the street or highway and any other conditions, and no person shall drive any vehicle in and upon any street or highway at a greater speed than will permit him to bring it to a stop within a safe enough time to avoid collision.

·  Columbus Dispatch – Business – 12/6/14 Kolman addition to legislative news Iron Pony has a 3 wheeled vehicle that has side by side seating, steering wheel, and enclosed cab. This vehicle is being called a motorcycle and it any crash statistics. As motorcyclist we need to define a motorcycle is.

Reminder – Today we vote for 2015 officers. Please see Randy to cast your ballots. Changes that have taken place since officer nominations were closed at the November meeting.

Brian Nissley – write in candidate for Franklin Co Coordinator - delete his name as Deputy Coordinator.

Randy Paul – write in candidate for Franklin Co Deputy Director.

Treasurer Report – Kim Chafin

While reading her report an error in dollar figures given were not correct.

Motion made by Kathy Gantner - 2nd by Cindy Balach To give Kim till next months meeting to correct the report and share results at the January meeting. Motion passed.

Secretary Report –Kathy Gantner

Motion made by Robin Pickins to waive the reading of the November minutes. 2nd by Brian Nissley. Motion passed.

Technology Report – Tony Losego

Nothing new to report.

·  Kim Chafin had a suggestion that we spruce up the Region 9 page on Abate.com website. Looking at other Regions, they have more information to keep readers informed and coming back to see what’s new.

Ø  Suggestions for the Region 9 site – adding an events/ calendar page where all events are listed even if not all the information is available at this time.

Ø  Memorial page – we can add members who have passed away.

Ø  Also a Facebook page that is kept up to date. All these social media pages can help us recruit members and keep all update. Kolman voiced a concern about monitoring the FB page so that not just anyone can post to the page.

Ø  Jim Cox willing to help with the FB page.

Old Business:

·  Points Program – those wanting to participate in the points program. Please turn in your information to Kolman before the January Board of Directors meeting.

·  Motorcycle Ohio – is looking for instructors for the 2015 class schedule. If interested, contact Motorcycle Ohio.

·  Toy Run Report – Melissa Stevens

$3680.25 - after expenses

$2392.16 - 65% to support military families

$1288.09 - 35% for Firefighters 4 Kids

Ø  Thoughts for next year’s run –no purchase of meat for the food line. Take it back to the basics of chili, hot dogs and toasted cheese. We had half of the meat bought left over. With not buying the meat we can take the price of the food line back to $5.00

Ø  Hollywood Casino has committed to doing the desserts again next year.

Ø  Suggest that we check out a different venue for the auction, possibly one that is closer to the end of the run. Berwick Manor has been suggested and Robin will get with the owners after the holidays are over.

Ø  We will be able to support 2 military families this year.

Ø  Toy Buy will be on Friday, Dec 12th, Big Lots in Grove City. Meet at 7pm

Ø  Dec 13th, presentation on TV at channel 4 for their Toy Drive. On air time has not yet been given. See Kolman if you would like to go to the station.

·  Legislative Seminar – March 27 & 28, 2015

Ø  J.R. Gantner -suggestion for a break out session – ODOT representative. To address the issue of yield signs being replaced with merge signs. Other topics of concern for motorcyclist – Why is grooved pavement now being used again? Cables in the median?

New Business:

·  Would it be possible for Abate to buy a session of the Motorcycle Ohio class and offer it to members? It was done in the past as an incentive for women to get their endorsement.

·  Daytona North – March 7th - possible locations

Ø  Kolman will get in contact with Dave Pallone the former owner Screamin Willies. He may have a new event location on the west side.

Ø  Need to get location and planning started so we can get flyers distributed.

Abate Officers are representatives of the organization. Keep in mind that we and the organization are judged by the way we handle difficult situations and people. DO NOT give Abate a black eye.

Officers can be dismissed for “conduct unbecoming” is in the By-laws.
