Key Element 1 - Create a scorecard
Create a scorecard system that gets the team playing to win. Count every class and publish regular teacher-rankings.
The benchmarks explored in this section will show you how to use data so it becomes a powerful tool to facilitate a more rewarding future for you, your instructors, your members and your facility management.
Key Element 2 - Maximize your timetable
Maximize attendances by putting your best teachers and best programs across all potential timeslots. Base this on numerical analysis but allow sufficient time for new teachers and new programs to develop.
The content in this section will help you manage these sorts of challenges:
- The variety of classes offered versus the need to build consistently high attendance levels;
- Acceptable benchmarks to establish when a class is struggling and what action should be taken to maximize attendances;
- The minimum number of each type of class that should be offered each week;
- When to add more classes of an existing program;
- When to add a new program.
Key Element 3 - Recruit world class instructors and keep them
Hunt out and build a team of rock star teachers.
Spend the time finding out what each individual aspires to and create a motivation and retention program driven by a combination of financial and non-financial rewards.
This section will explore:
- The impact of a powerful instructor team on facility success;
- What it takes to be a great instructor;
- Sourcing talented instructors;
- Hiring for excellence;
- Rewarding instructors to build loyalty.
- Instructors are as critical to success as powerful program development.
Key Element 4 - Organize world class instructor training
Constantly upskill your teaching team towards mastery by implementing an external (e.g. Les Mills) and internal training & assessment calendar.
This section will explore:
- The importance of instructor training;
- The impact of the Group Fitness (GF) Manager’s approach to quality and excellence;
- The relative roles of Les Mills’ Agents versus licensee facilities;
- Recommendations about in-house training;
- Tools to assist in continuous development of your instructors.
Key Element 5 - Develop the best studio you can afford
Create a WOW Group Fitness space - get the best design input you can afford.
If the experience wasn’t important they would be in the cardio theatre or weights room.To deliver life-changing fitness experiences every time in your studios, you need:
- Great programs
- Role model instructors
- An inspiring environment
This section focuses on creating an inspiring studio environment which will enhance people’s experiences in each class they take.
We analyze this at two levels:
- Functional requirements for studio design
- Experiential options for studio design
Key Element 6 - Create a GF Marketing plan
Use GF for member acquisition and retention by promoting powerful GF events.
Build your brand by incorporating world class GF marketing materials into your internal and external promotions.
This section will help you grow your Group Fitness (GF) attendances by offering you:
- A succinct overview of marketing theory to apply to GF
- Marketing strategies specifically tailored for GF
- Tools to help implement those marketing strategies
These strategies and tools are tried and tested around the world, so take the plunge and transform your department with marketing flair!
Key Element 7 - Plan for success
Build an action plan to achieve your goals using the tools in Key elements 1-7. Cost and prioritize the plan within your budget. Report quarterly to both management and your team and work with them to plan the next plays.
This section outlines how planning supports effective reporting to management about the achievements of Group Fitness (‘GF’) by:
- Linking budgeting to the Key Elements;
- Setting out recommended reporting templates and reporting frequency;
- Highlighting how to use reporting data to motivate your team.
Effective reporting is the most powerful weapon you have to get your facility manager’s attention and so secure ongoing support for GF.
Key Element 8 - Appoint or be a world class GF Manager (GFM)
From a GF Manager’s viewpoint:
Become a great GF leader by passionately implementing the key elements of GFM and building a powerful, purpose driven team.
From a club manager’s viewpoint:
Hire a Manager with the passion and drive to build a world class GF operation through rigorous implementation of the key elements of GFM.
This section will highlight how your leadership as Group Fitness (‘GF’) Manager can have a huge impact on:
- Your members
- Your instructor team
- Your overall facility success
It will outline:
- Your role as GF Manager
- The skills required to be ‘great’

Do you want to motivate your instructors to bring new members to your club?
If so - try this!
- Give your instructors a set number of free club passes each month which have their names on the back.
- Offer rewards each month for the instructors who brings 3 - 5 or more non-members to the club.
- Quickly calculate rewards based on the number of free passes handed in to reception each month.
- Remember to include re-launch months - but set a higher target as promotions will bring more people to your club!
- Give instructors rewards like clothing, flowers, paying for music etc for their excellent efforts.
