Kentucky Regions Home Project

Due Friday, November 11, 2011

Description of the project:

  • Research the five regions of Kentucky: Eastern Coal Fields, Bluegrass, Western Coal Fields, Pennyroyal, and Jackson Purchase. The Knobs Region is now considered part of the Bluegrass Region.
  • Using the information from this research, write a summary of interesting facts about the region. This needs to include human features and natural features such as major cities, the nature of the land/landforms/waterways, animals/plants, industry, farming, natural resources, and interesting facts. Interesting facts could include the reason for the region’s name, famous people from that region, neat places to visit, etc. The summary for each region needs to be long enough to contain the information above. Do not write one or two sentences per region!!
  • Make sure you write down the websites or books you use. When researching, you need to give credit to your sources.
  • Using the map provided, create a visual display (poster, etc.) that will enhance the presentation of the information you have gathered.
  • On the map, regions must be outlined. Clearly mark major cities. You may also mark places of interest.
  • Projects will be presented to the class on Friday, November 11.

We have read about each region in class. All students have taken notes in class about the regions on a chart. These notes provide a great deal of information about the regions.

Students may also use their Kentucky Adventures textbook and on-line resources. Some good websites include:

A scoring guide and rubric are included on this note. Please refer to these as you complete your projects.

Parents are certainly invited to assist the students, but please remember that this is a learning experience for the child!

Note: You only get the one map that is coming home with this note. If you lose it, you must find another on your own. We only have enough for each fourth grader to have one.
