Job Title: Campaigns Manager

Responsible to: Chief Executive Officer

Salary: £32,000 per annum pro rata

Full Time: 21 hpw

Contract: 1 year fixed term contract with the potential to extend subject to funding.

Overall Purpose of the Job:

To develop and lead campaigning that promotes improved services and better lives for people with learning disabilities and their carers both locally and nationally. Managing and leading on all group events and campaigns for Ealing Mencap.

The primary role of this campaigns management post is to:

  • Develop, implement and manage Ealing Mencap’s campaigning department.
  • Seek further funding to ensure growth and sustainability.
  • Develop and deliver a campaigning strategy that supports the best interests of people with LD and their carer’s in Ealing, supporting the overall mission of Ealing Mencap.
  • Inform, engage and involve Ealing Mencap customers, staff, stakeholders and board members in campaigning activities.
  • Be informed about all key legislation and legislative changes affecting the lives of and services for people with LD and their carer’s. Be able to share this information with others.
  • Keep up-to-date with Royal Mencap’s campaigns as well as other national and local learning disability issues.
  • Develop a campaigning volunteer base, ensuring volunteers are trained, motivated and acknowledged for their work.
  • Develop, coordinate and manage the delivery and evaluation of compelling, creative campaigns in Ealing and neighbouring boroughs with user support and input.
  • Advise and support carer and user led campaigns that develop within Ealing.
  • Establish links with key politicians and Local Authority (LA) officers in Ealing, developing a good understanding of the local political process, the structure and working of the LA.
  • Build links and undertake partnership work with local businesses, other charities and the local community to raise awareness and support.
  • Overview the work of the Power Group (elected voice of PWLD in Ealing) ensuring PWLD have a strong presence and influence decision making in Ealing.

Working hours

This is a 21 hour a week post and will require flexible working.

Place of work

This is a peripatetic role; the post holder will have hot-desk facilities and meeting room hire at a main base.

Main Duties and Responsibilities are:

  1. To campaign effectively on issues of relevance to people with a learning disability and their carer’s.
  2. To implement and contribute towards the development of strategies to raise public awareness and increase public participation in campaigns in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
  3. To keep up to date with current national and local developments pertaining to learning disability.
  4. To build and maintain professional relationships with local councillors and politicians, highlighting issues that are relevant to Ealing Mencap’s vision and mission.
  5. To overview the further development of Ealing Partners and the Power Group, so they are recognised and valued as the voice of learning disability in Ealing. Ensuring that the group promotes local issues as well as always having a focus on the particular campaigns that Royal Mencap are promoting and to take responsibility for linking this to local campaigns where relevant.
  6. With the support of the senior management team, the board of trustees, the Power Group and the direct staff team, lead on lobbying politicians, companies and other decision makers as appropriate.
  7. To develop close links with other local organisations supporting PWLD, encouraging joint working on key local and national issues.
  8. To work with Ealing Mencap’s senior management team, the organisation’s staff, the Power Group and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that key political opportunities are acted upon.
  9. To maintain and develop in partnership with Ealing Mencap’s Business Support team administrative systems and procedures necessary for the organisation’s campaigning work.
  10. To work with Ealing Mencap’s Business Support Team to promote, recruit and develop a robust volunteer campaign arm.
  11. To obtain and collate information as required and develop expertise on aspects of campaigns as required. To ensure effective follow-up, feedback and analysis with regard to the outcomes of any campaign.
  12. To manage and work closely with the Power Group Empowerment Lead supporting them in their role. To link with Ealing Mencap’s advocate to maintain awareness about live issues impacting locally.
  13. To ensure that Ealing Mencap maintains its reputation as a source of accurate, reliable information and successful communication in relation to your work
  14. To work with the Chief Executive and Marketing lead to create relevant professional marketing material and create media interest in Ealing Mencap’s campaigns. Developing/writing articles in line with Ealing Mencap’s publication and media policy; for example
  • Writing press releases
  • Taking photographs at events
  • Asking local papers or student journalists if they would like to report on a campaigns event
  • Writing opinion pieces or letters to the editor of the local paper
  • Developing and managing the group’s Facebook account / Twitter account in conjunction with Marketing Lead
  • Blogging about Ealing Mencaps campaigns and fundraising events and achievements

ESSENTIAL:

Qualification/ Experience

  1. Educated to degree level or equivalent experience that demonstrates ability to build key strategic partnerships.
  2. Experience that demonstrates ability to lead a successful project and building this into a sustainable service.
  3. Demonstrable experience of writing persuasively, producing articles or blogs.
  4. Experience of applying for grants/bids and marketing services to enable future project/service sustainability.
  5. Experience of working within the Health and Social care sector (public/private/voluntary).
  6. Experience of complex project management.
  7. Experience of writing and implementing business and project plans.
  8. Substantial experience of working with funders/external agencies and other statutory and voluntary partners, with an ability to maintain good working relationships with contacts in organisations and an ability to manage networks of organisations and individuals.
  9. Effective communicator, including with people who use non-verbal communication or have limited mental capacity.
  10. Experience of managing budgets
  11. Experience in recruitment
  12. Experience of supervising and line managing paid staff and volunteers, including individuals who have a learning disability.
  13. Able to develop accessible information for people with a range of different needs and abilities.
  14. Experience of outcome based working and demonstrating that outcomes have been achieved in a timely manner.
  15. Experience of delivering information and customer representation.

Knowledge/skills

1. Extensive knowledge and understanding of the current Health and Social Care agenda.

2. Understanding of the safeguarding of adults at risk procedures.

3. Excellent IT skills including Microsoft office and other IT communication media e.g. Google Apps, database systems.

4. Good understanding of the issues faced by people with disabilities

5. Very good numeracy and literacy skills and ability to communicate complicated messages authoritatively and clearly to different audiences.

6. Establishing and maintaining good working relationships.

7. Excellent communication skills including verbal, written and presentation skills.

9. Knowledge of the charitable sector.

11. Events management experience including conferences.

  1. Due to the nature of the work, if successful, you will need to have a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
  2. You will be expected to at times work evenings and very occasional weekends
  3. You will need to be able to travel across the borough of Ealing and be able to work in different offices and community environments.
  4. You will need on occasion to attend national events in other areas of the country and support others to attend such events.
