COURSE GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS

It is the responsibility of every student to contribute in developing an educational climate within the classroom. Your behavior in the classroom is expected to be one that allows other students the opportunity to learn. This means you are to respect one another in both your actions and your words. NO ONE is to interfere with the education of the other students. All students will follow the discipline code as described in the student handbook.

This course is designed for those students who have successfully completed the two-year

Algebra 1 and Informal Geometry program. It is an informal approach to a standard Algebra

course with emphasis on basic skills and techniques. Topics include matrices, probability,

statistics, linear systems, quadratics, polynomials, rational expressions and exponents. Students

enrolled in this class should have successfully complete Algebra I, part 2 and Informal Geometry

or Algebra 1 and Geometry. If there are topics that you are uncertain with while reviewing these

topics briefly, you are expected to spend time outside of the classroom studying them to further

your understanding of Algebra. I am available to help as is the school’s afterschool study center.

Each student must arrive on time with his/her book, notebook, and a writing utensil. You should be fully prepared for class and enter the room ready to work on the warm-up on the overhead. At the beginning of class everyday, I will check the homework, so you should have it out as soon as class begins. While I take attendance and check homework, you will work on warm up problems and keep them in your notebook.

CLASS REQUIREMENTS:

MATERIALS 3 Subject Notebook: One section for Warm-up exercises, writing assignments and cool down problems, one section for notes, one section for homework.

CLASS RULES AND PROCEDURES

All students are required to keep a neat, orderly notebook for this class. Each day, in the your classnotes section, you should put the date, the section we are covering, and all the notes and examples that go on the board or overheard. If you are absent it is your responsibility to get the days notes from a classmate. You can expect approximately 6 quizzes per marking period. If you miss a quiz, you must make it up within 3 days. You can expect one test per marking period. If you are absent, you must make up the test on your return within 3 days. You will be given projects throughout the year. Depending on the amount of work involved, these projects will be equivalent to either quiz or test grades.

HOMEWORK All homework is to be completed and corrected. When you have a problem done incorrectly in your homework, you must correct it when we go over it in class, or if you did not complete your homework, you must make it up. ALL homework for a given chapter must be completed prior to the chapter test. If you are absent and the absence is excused, then you must show me your homework on your return. Expect homework every night.

METHOD OF EVALUATION

Notebook quizzes will be given periodically. Four (4) notebook quizzes is equal to a regular quiz. Quizzes account for 40% of your marking period grade. Tests account for 30% of your marking period grade. Homework accounts for 15% of your marking period grade. Class participation and attendance accounts for 15% of your marking period grade.
