WELCOME & INTRODUCTIONS

Motion to accept July 10 meeting minutes from Cedric and 2nd by Chris, unanimously approved. There was no meeting in August.

Karen welcomed Tony Gianninoto on board as MSPF Coordinator and advised members Coalition did not receive DFC grant, but fundraisers were an option to gain funds.

REPORTS

Ron

  • Reported he received two TIPs line calls and will be holding two TIPs trainings
  • Compliance checks continue – violations result in fine and suspensions
  • Members were urged to attend meetings held by Board of Liquor Commissioners, next meeting 9/19/12 at 9:30 am, HAPS building, Rm 101.
  • Discussed future of TIPS line possibly being absorbed by Sherriff’s office or EMS. Ron will be ending his handling of this line in 7 days.
  • Drug Line reporting is 410-479-4222, leave message.

Tony

  • Applicants for Part-time AmeriCorps position have been interviewed, but there is a funding hold-up. If position can’t be filled due to funding, there is $6000 in grant money that must be used by 10/1/12 that may be able to be allocated.

Karen

  • Distributed email received on DFC Progress Report Review Status which was favorable
  • Moving ahead with implementation even though strategic plan still needs tweaking for approval. Additional information needed from Linda Walls to complete. Anticipate approval by the October meeting.

SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS

Jessica -

  • Report will be emailed
  • Action steps: education and materials to schools, sporting events, PTA, PTO, Victim Impact Meetings, Teen Court, Prisons. Show presence at events. 1/25/13 Educational Jeopardy scheduled 6-8 pm.
  • Establish or work with existing afterschool clubs. Asked about funding for stipends for teachers to hold afterschool clubs.

Karen – Alcohol Related Crashes

  • Committee members: Tony, Karen, Marina
  • Be The Wall Campaign – distribute @ school programs, have youth work tables to get service learning hours. Cedric reported three events scheduled in Federalsburg for fall.
  • Need additional materials on alcohol related crashes.

Ron – Social Hosting Ordinance

  • Committee submitted a sample ordinance to Sherriff’s office who in sent to county attorney. Attorney advised ordinance not necessary and cited current laws already on books. Ordinance will be reviewed at Chief’s Meeting.
  • It was also suggested that rewards for police officers going the extra mile could be utilized.

PARTNER REPORTS

Don – Distributed applications for $9.95 Comcast available to those receiving free lunch

Ann – Networking event at Adkins Aboretum on 9/12/12 5-7 pm

Marina – Gave report on Community Garden, Art Council (2nd Saturday) and Friday Night Series

Laura – Promoting Prescription Drop Box located at Denton Police Dept. to patients at Health

Dept. Request also from Federalsburg patients to have one there. It was noted that

Federalsburg Police Dept was approached to house a box, but declined due to short

staff.

Dana – YMCA is continuing to look at options for learning to swim for Caroline children.

Recent event held Caroline Co. Country Club was huge success. Cedric updated there

are four potential sites to install a community pool in Federalsburg.

Jessica – Announced she is now Director of Head Start Program Caroline County which serves

Approx 170 children. Holding a fundraiser for technology equipment approx $67000.

Ron Dixon – Shoulder Taps, where cadets attempt to get someone to purchase liquor

on their behalf, were a success this spring resulting in fines of $100-125 with all guilty

verdicts on those charged. Continuing DUI & Saturation Patrols. Have received

$12,000 grant for FY 2013 to continue.

Tony – Ron’s Alcohol Inspector position is ending as current funded. Commissioners may be

interested and members are urged to contact to stress importance of this position.

Members urged Tony to draft letter on behalf of the Coalition.

Chris – Investigating fundraiser events for the Coalition. Any suggestions welcomed. Suggested

Trish Todd – Girls Circle support group for teenage girls to begin 9/19, Healthy Minds Book

Club beginning 9/19, Mom’s Coffee Support Group – 1st Friday of Month 9:30-10:30,

School Based Mental Health Conference 11/9/12 @ Chesapeake College, Family Fun

Days 9/15/12 & October date to be advised, REACH retreat Nov 30th, Dec 1-2.

Trish Noble – Open House at Caroline Counseling Center Tuesday, Sept 18th 3-7 pm. Held

contest for Women’s group to express recovery in an artistic fashion.

Cedric – Pursuing Gang Awareness event with Captain Holmes to be held 1st week of October

Which will target information for parents. Partner with ABC Day Care for Octoberfest

To be held Oct 16-17.
