Accounting Advisory Meeting Room # 7334 - TTC

FRIDAY, MAY 7, 2010

Advisory members and faculty present:

Chairperson Rick Hesse, Eunice Levy, Deb Nelson, , Barb Shouldice, Steve Ostrowski, Jean Vollink, Justin Baiers, Don Gribbin, Ranelle Smith, and Steven Walman.

The meeting was called to order at 8:30 a.m. by Chairperson, Rick Hesse.

1. Minutes from the October 16, 2009, meeting were reviewed. The minutes were approved as submitted.

2. AGAIN - WELCOME - OUTSIDE ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEMBERS:

3. ACCOUNTING STRATEGIC MISSION STATEMENT:

Steven Walman circulated a short list of relevant statements regarding KVCC’s accounting mission statement. Relevant discussion among all board members suggested some changes and these changes are reflected in the statement listed below. The Committee intends to finalize the KVCC Accounting Mission Statement via e-mail before our next advisory meeting.

KVCC ACCOUNTING MISSION STATEMENT

The Accounting department at Kalamazoo Valley Community College prepares students with intellectual and professional tools for accounting and related careers applicable to all types of diverse, multifaceted and multicultural organizations.

1.  Provide a learning environment that prepares students to become ethical leaders in a profession characterized by continuous change.

2.  Provide students with a diverse set of skills emphasizing technical competence, interpersonal communication, and teamwork.

3.  Provide students with curricula that give the knowledge and abilities necessary to be successful in the existing and future accounting profession and having global awareness and its impact upon accounting.

4.  Prepare students for lifelong learning.

4. ACCOUNTING 103 (Quick Books) AND ACCOUNTING 108 (Peachtree)

Committee agreed to change Accounting 103 Course Title to “Accounting with QuickBooks.” Accounting Learning Objectives, General Education Outcomes, and prerequisites were updated as well. See attached.

Committee also agreed to change Accounting 108 Learning Objectives, General Education Outcomes, and Prerequisites too. See attached.

5. KVCC’S EXTERNAL VALIDATION – ACCOUNTING PROGRAM

Two external programs were discussed concerning assessing the accounting program. The first was utilizing AccounTemps as an independent measuring tool. They offer many testing modules covering journal entries, accounting software, and spreadsheets.

The second program discussed was the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB). This program is more academic in nature but is highly accredited for two-year accountants.

Steven Walman is looking into the costs and benefits of each program.

6.  NEXT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING

The next Committee meeting is scheduled for October 23, 2010 at 8:30AM.
