Early Years Literacy Lesson 2 - Teacher Notes

Summary

Children will watch a video to learn about some of the ways in which BBC Children in Need helps to change the lives of less fortunate children. Through a simple discussion they will understand how the money that they raise can make children’s lives happier.

During this lesson, children will create posters and invitations for their fundraising events and learn simple lyrics and actions to a song/rhyme to be performed in the Celebration of Champions. The emphasis is on having fun whilst fundraising and empowering children that, through their fundraising, they are changing lives!

Learning Outcomes

Writing

Children will:

Use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways that match their spoken sounds

Introduction

Children watch Video 3: Where will your fundraising go? from slide 2 of the Teacher PowerPoint. This video explains the work done by BBC Children in Need with the money raised from fundraising events. Talk about your setting’s fundraising plans; wearing fancy dress for a donation, holding a bake sale, and the Celebration of Champions.

Activities

Following the video, children write down something that makes them happy and illustrate it. They can do this on their whiteboards.

Different groups of children create posters and/or invitations (emergent/underwriting depending on ability – see templates on slides 3-7 in Teacher PowerPoint) for different fundraising events:

Pudsey teddy bear’s picnic poster

Pudsey teddy bear’s picnic that parents/carers pay to attend

Bake sale

Children learn a short song or rhyme about Pudsey Bear (slides 8 and 9) with actions to be performed in the Celebration of Champions. This could be to the tune of ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’. The final slide of the PowerPoint contains some example lyrics.

Whole Class Plenary

Children share their sentence that they wrote down at the beginning of the lesson about something that makes them happy. As a group, children can then briefly reflect on why some children in the UK are unhappy.

Record the children performing their piece and upload to school website for parents to see.

It’s time for action – start organising your fundraising event with your class! Don’t forget to tell the lead Champions your fundraising plans so they can give you a helping hand.
