“Needy Little Hearts”

Brief History of The organisation

K J Research Foundation {KJRF} and K J Hospital were founded by the renowned transplant surgeon. DR K Jagadeesan at Chennai, India. Several research projects in Basic Sciences and tertiary care specialities have been undertaken and are being processed. Publications in national and international journals have been enumerated below. KJRF has adopted 2 villages and is also involved in primary health care.

Needy Little Hearts is one project under KJRF that conducts free cardiac surgery, rehabilitation for less affluent and research for prevention of heart diseases in children. This was begun in 2005. 49 free cardiac surgeries have been performed from the corpus fund created by contributions from philanthropists, international agencies and the Government. 9 research projects are on the anvil. We welcome those donors who wish to contribute separately for free cardiac surgery, rehabilitation and research for prevention of heart diseases in children.

Goals and Objectives

a). 200 surgeries/year initially to 1000 surgeries per year in 2021

b). Rehabilitation of these children

PROGRAM AND SERVICE

The Scheme

Alleviation of cardiac disability through surgery of children with heart disease, rehabilitation of these children after surgery and prevention of cardiac disease through research

This scheme was conceived due to the recognition of disparity between demand and performance. In Tamilnadu 14,000 children are born per year with Congenital Heart Disease. Government hospitals are able to touch only the fringe of the problem. So there is an urgent need of other hospitals to support the Government hospitals. To make this scheme purposeful operated children should be rehabilitated and heart disease should be prevented through research.

This holistic three-dimensional approach is imperative for this ongoing scheme. It is vital that it should grow in geometric progression to meet this tip of the iceberg.

Less Affluent Kids' Cardiac Fund Under K J Research Foundation

This fund is being created by contributions from philanthropists, corporates, government and International Agencies. The amount $25,885,331 (approx 26 million $) should gradually swell to an amount $431,422,217 (approx $ 432 million), whose interest should be capable of running this scheme. The amount initially requested will be $ 520,800 per year for the performance of 200 surgeries per year, their rehabilitation and research for prevention. Performance report can be scrutinised to decide on further course of action.

Area profile and target beneficiary profile

This project accepts children from Tamilnadu, all over India and all those who need. Children from the below poverty line and lower middle income group are the target population. They are below 18 yrs of age. Some of them do not go to school. Some get their education from Corporation Schools or those imparting free education.

On an average the earning member brings around Rs 2000/- RS 4000/- per month if he is not a drunkard. Rented house takes RS 800/- to 1000/- Ends are met only by taking debts at exorbitant interest rates. Only the interests are returned by borrowing from others. How can they ever hope to meet the expenses of Cardiac Surgery?

These children have only one way to go. They can only go to Government Hospitals which are over crowded with nearly 1000 children in the waiting list. They are apart from the 14,000 children who are born every year in Tamil Nadu. These children either die or become in operable. The Government of Tamil Nadu taking cognizance of the seriousness of the situation have consented to enter into a Public – Private Partnership by contributing Rs.30,000/- for Simple Open Heart Surgeries Rs.70,000/- for Complex Open Heart Surgeries and Rs.10,000/- for Closed Heart Surgeries. Therefore there is an urgent need for contribution from Philanthropic organisations, Philanthropists, Corporate with CSR and International Agencies to ensure continuous, steady and sure professional care and sustainability.

SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES

Objectives and Goals for this Request (How will this grant strengthen the organization, address the issues, make improvements, or achieve success?):

MONITORING and EVALUATION

There are 3 components to this project which have to be evaluated be different bodies

1) The surgical component whose professional performance and outcome have to be evaluated. This will be done by a monitoring committee in the hospital.

2) The post operative and rehabilitation component will be monitored by the same hospital committee.

3) Financial component. There will be two committees – Internal and external who will be auditing the finance. The members of the committees will include an internal and external auditor respectively, a legal adviser and a neutral, honest and well renowned citizen of repute.

The impact will be on the underprivileged group of children with heart diseases.

At the end of 14 years, 7600 children would have been operated, rehabilitated and prevention of cardiac diseases through research would have given life to many more children through methods of prevention.

Total cost accrued would be Rs 500,00,00,000/- ($1250,000,000) for surgery, rehabilitation and research for prevention This would be the beginning of a new era of healthy joy that would rule the world.

An amount equivalent to Rs 2000,00,00,000/-( $ 50000,000,000/-) at that time would yield a 6% interest of Rs 500,00,00,000/- ($ 1250,000,000/-) for 1000 surgeries to be performed, rehabilitation and research for prevention, which would make the project self-sufficient. So the final requirement will be Rs 3000,00,00,000/- ($ 1750,000,000) which includes inflation charges. We are convinced that this money exists in the hands of people who wish to do good. We cannot envisage that this project will be a failure at any time. It has to win for there are too many good people who would pride in doing the best for their brethren. However the onus of convincing that we are earnest and that we wish to be transparent in any financial transaction, is entirely on us
