Section 3: Supplemental (Non-Vacancy Specific) Recruitment Activities Undertaken by WUOM

Internship Program Designed to Assist Members of the Community to Acquire Skills Needed for Broadcast Employment. Michigan Radio offers an extensive intern program to University of Michigan students and members of the public, which gives them an opportunity to gain experience in broadcasting. Typically 20 interns are hired each year and placed in the News, Traffic, Development and Programming areas. Interns work scheduling interviews, reviewing books, doing guest research, nationwide studio placement, sending electronic feeds and fulfilling listener requests for tapes as part of the Programming department and the Great Lakes Radio Consortium. They write and pre-record news stories for local news breaks, the Arts and Humanities radio project and the Great Lakes Radio Consortium as part of the news team. Interns learn how to schedule underwriting and spot announcements for the local breaks and engineer ISDN feeds as part of the traffic team. And, they learn how to process membership gifts as part of the Development team. Michigan Radio also participates in externship programs with area schools. For example, the most recent program (May, 2006) we have a high school senior from St John’s Jesuit High School in Toledo working with us for three weeks. He chose Michigan Radio as his required three-week internship. He is learning the basics of broadcast news, how public radio works and is recording his experience.

EEO Outreach - Job Fair Participation. Michigan Radio participates in university and community outreach efforts such as the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Regional Broadcasting Career Fair.

Michigan Radio staff served on a panel who met with college students interested in radio journalism at a public radio news directors conference. Michigan Radio staff has discussed public radio opportunities and news gathering with twoUniversity of Michigan-Flintwriting classes. Michigan Radio staff has led a session for teenage girls at a regional youth center for underprivileged kids. We discussed the challenges and career opportunities woman have in broadcasting.

Training Programs for Station Personnel. Michigan Radio provides broadcast training for current employees as a means of enhancing skills. A professional broadcast trainer comes to Michigan Radio approximately three times per year to train news staff, on-air hosts and freelance reporters in the areas of voice, writing for broadcast and delivery.

Training for Management Personnel on Methods of Ensuring Equal Employment Opportunity and Preventing Discrimination. Michigan Radio provides diversity training to upper management personnel to ensure equal employment opportunity and to prevent discrimination. Michigan Radio makes two EEO on-air announcements per month, as well as posting EEO information on our website.

Community Events Designed to Educate and Inform the Public About Broadcasting Opportunities. Michigan Radio offers tours of the station to area Boy Scout Troops and summer camp program participants as well as other interested groups. Michigan Radio provides a hands-on radio display and sponsors a four-day workshop at the Hands-on-Museum in Ann Arbor once a year.
