Dear Sir/Madam,

Re:Work Experience, 18th – 22nd April 2016

This school in previous years has, with the help of local employers, run some very successful work experience programmes, which have greatly assisted the students to confirm their choice of career. I am certain that you are aware that not only does this work experience provide students with an opportunity to explore the working environment, its disciplines, relationships and skills, but it is a great morale booster and confidence builder. There are few students in their final year who are not somewhat fearful at the prospect of leaving school; work experience helps them to overcome their insecurity and to realise they do have an important role to play in society.

Legislation has been passed to allow students to take part in work experience schemes. The scheme is an integral part of Year 10’s Careers Education. Employers should not therefore make any payment to participants, although there is no objection to employers assisting with certain expenses such as extra fares and the cost of meals. As far as insurance is concerned, an employer must have both public liability insurance and employer’s liability insurance and conform to current Health & Safety legislation.

During Work Experience, students will complete a workbook so that they can record the information and impressions they gain. We would be most grateful for any help staff could give in this direction. If time permits, a mock interview is also very valuable experience for a young person. Also, to help students to evaluate their performance at the end of work experience, please would you be kind enough to fill in an Employers Assessment Form which will be given to you on the first morning of a student’s visit. We hope to visit all students on their work experience and do hope this will not cause any inconvenience.

If you feel that you are in a position to give some practical experience to a student of this school interested in the work you are doing, please fill in the attached forms and return them to school as soon as possible.

During the work experience period should there be any problems please do not hesitate to telephone me on the above number.

Yours sincerely

Mr Tom Dolley
