Statement of Purpose

Motivation

This summer, I took a trip to Taitung, a developing area in southeast Taiwan with beautiful mountains, coastline, and islets. I met a tour guide whose name, Shan Zhu, means wild boar. He is an aborigine who grew up in the mountains and now devotes himself to ecology and anthropogeography. During the journey with Shan Zhu in Taitung, I suddenly found how deficient the government’s work has been on both preserving the scenic resort’s natural resources and developing its tourism. For instance, despite the objections from some ecologists and the local residents, the government allowed businessmen to built a hotel in the middle of the coast, which destroys the coastline scenery. Neither are the local governments’ efforts in internationalizing its tourism successful: no matter in the “International Pottery Festival” or “International Lotus Festival,” we can seldom find foreigners but a few Taiwanese instead. These are the tips of the iceberg in Taiwan’s lack of experts in tourism development and policy evaluation on the one hand and rapid commercialization on the other. After developing my language abilities, analytical thinking, creativity and interpersonal skills both at school and at work, therefore, I want to focus my efforts on developing my country’s environmental tourism. Applying for Master of Tourism will be the first step to reach my goal.

Academic Background

Tourism study, I believe, needs three basic skills in analysis and planning, creativity and interpersonal skills, which I found opportunities to develop in university. In the literature and culture courses I took in the English Department of Fu-Jen Catholic University, we analyzed the social background and cultural effects through both reading texts and doing field investigation. The most impressive project we did was “The Fall and Rebirth of Treasure Hill” in the course Postmodern City Texts. Treasure Hill, once an important military position near downtown, has been packed with veterans, artists and new immigrants in its illegal shacks and winding paths. To rebuild this area as an “art village,” the city government needed to not only renovate and re-design a space for the retired soldiers, artists and their modern art installations, but also attract more attention to and support of the city renovation. This investigation, made me realize that planners of village recreation have to consider the area’s historical and cultural values, the psychology of the residents, and its geographic features, which are related to my future study.

I started to take up jobs involving both creativity and interpersonal skills in the junior year of my college life. I designed a website for English Comprehension with the News ( and edit Elite Magazine and Annual Graduation Book for English Department publication. Also, I joined an independent drama production Beyond Therapy, and took charge of its sound effects and website design. From this production, I learned how to manage my time to finish my school work when the rehearsal lasted till midnight; how to communicate with the other designers when we disputed over the cue of music and lighting, and how to meet everyone’s needs without compromising my principles. All of the experiences of working with a client or in a team honed my communication skills and prepared me for the more challenging jobs after the graduation.

Working Experience

After the graduation, I further developed my creativity, interpersonal and planning skills when working as a full-time assistant in Fu Jen University’s Teaching Excellence Project (funded by the Ministry of Education). Working in the English education part of this huge project, I set up the websites of Online English Self-Learning Center ( and the Intermediate and Advanced English Distance-Learning Program ( maintained the websites’ design consistency and updated their information. Also, I helped make and carry out the budget plans; coordinated a wide variety of works ranging from assistant training, multimedia teaching material production, course offering and promotion, to designing promotion activities for English self-learning. The seven-month work experience provided me not only some basic understanding of the administrative procedures of government funding and project execution, but also opportunities in designing large-scale and effective promotion activities.

To gain experience in service industry, I then took up the job as wedding assistant planner in a Japanese-style wedding banquet planning company--Grace Hill. In this company, which emphasizes high-quality service and systematic wedding planner training, I went through the whole gamut of being a cleaner, a brides’assistant, and a banquet tour guide, to the assistant planner within a four-month period. Moreover, I’ve joined more than 15 wedding productions, and realized why “customer service” becomes an important issue to be discussed. Are the customers always right? How to find the balance between the company benefit and the customer needs? I believe that the quandary might be occurred in every service industry, but it can be even more complicated in tourism since we need to consider not only the needs of tourists, but also those of the environment and its residents.

In preparation for my further studies in tourism management, I then moved on to work in a major culture industry in Taiwan: NationalChiangKaiSheikCulturalCenter, the most representative performing venue and a popular tour spot in Taiwan. Now working in the information center, I provide telephone, on-site, program-related enquiry service and theater tour guide. To gather and offer information, I need to be in close contact with the colleagues from the Center’s Departments of Marketing, Programming, Construction, as well as international and local performing units such as the Cloud Gate. Such experience gives me a rare opportunity to understand the operation of a cultural creativity industry and to be on the frontline of promoting it. Most importantly, it stimulates my desire to combine my interests in performing arts, creative program design and customer service in my career: environmental tourism.

Future Plan

Tourism is a complicated term which includes the different aspects in nature, culture, cuisine, religion, and people. To draw on resources from all these fields and design tourist programs beneficial to both tourists and local residents will be my final goal. Before that, I would like to firstly focus on destination and event development, and do a research of tourism in Taiwan to improve my knowledge in this field before I get the admission. After entering the school, I am going to study the theories and the cases to strengthen the academic background and learn the experiences from other countries. My work experience in an educational project, a wedding banquet company and in a culture center, I believe, has prepared me to embark on my pursuit of the career in environmental tourism development. Were I admitted to your program, I look forward to receiving the solid training in your program. After finishing the degree, I will go back to Taiwan to join the civil service exam, and enter the related organization to contribute what I have learned and work on the sustainable tourism. By then, I believe I can help Taiwan become a key tour spot for travelers around the world.
