Hundreds gather as Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell presents Senator Edward Kennedy with Lifetime Achievement Award

BOSTON, MA - A sold-out crowd of over 300 gathered at the Four Seasons Hotel on Friday, March 3rdto honorSenator Edward M. Kennedywith a Lifetime Achievement Award and present the 2006 Living Legends Awards to Edward O. Owens and Liz Walker. In a program that included historical interpreters and song, the Museum of Afro-American History presented the awards at their annual Jubilation Gala fundraising event. In presenting the Museum’s highest honor to Senator Kennedy, Boston Celtics legend and 2004 Lifetime Achievement recipient Bill Russell,graciously joked with Kennedy about being on the same team and how difficult it was to teach to Kennedy how to ‘go to the right’. He also proudly said “welcome to the club Teddy.”
Receiving the Living Legends Awards was journalist, Liz Walker and businessman Edward Owens. Owens of Owens Movers, received the award from VP of Marketing for Bank of America, RobertGallery. Owens father started the family business in the 1920’s with a two wheel cart he used to carry the baggage of immigrants from the Boston docks to North Cambridge. It has since become the largest owned minority business in New England. While presenting the Living Legends Award to Broadcast Journalist Liz Walker, Mayor Thomas Menino said of Walkerthat “her public service is legendary her in Boston and abroad.” He lauded her work as Co-Founder of My Sister’s Keeper, a grassroots organization designed to assist women in business in the Sudan.
The evening was festive andlively as guests mingled and dined on the exquisite menu of swordfish and mango salsa and baby green salad with prosciutto. Jazz music was performed by Kendrick Oliver and the New Life Jazz Ensemble.
